North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr told the Associated Press today that if asked he’d accept the vice president slot on a John McCain ticket. “You’re not going to say ‘no’ to a future president,” the 52-year-old first-term Republican said in an interview. Burr, who won John Edwards’ open Senate seat in 2004 and had previously served five terms in the U.S. House, added that although he has been seen alongside McCain on the campaign trail, the two have not formally discussed teaming up.
Here’s an historical tidbit from the AP: “Burr also has some vice presidential blood. He’s a distant cousin of Aaron Burr, who nearly became the nation’s third president before taking the vice presidency behind Thomas Jefferson.”

As we head toward Super Tuesday, the Democrats have narrowed their field of candidates down to Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, with John Edwards “suspending” his campaign today “so that history can blaze its path.” (Technically, there are still three Democratic candidates, if you count Mike Gravel.) According to a recent Associated Press–Yahoo poll, four in 10 Edwards supporters would pick Clinton as their second choice, while a quarter would go with Obama.

Barack Obama has won the South Carolina Democratic primary with ease, capturing more than 50 percent of the vote. Hillary Clinton was a distant second, with John Edwards, who won this contest four years ago, coming in a disappointing third. “South Carolina voters rejected the politics of the past and they wanted something different,” said Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs.

Hillary Clinton took to the pulpit again yesterday, this time at Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church in SoCal. The Democratic presidential hopeful spoke at Warren’s Global Summit on AIDS and the Church, the same conference her top rival Barack Obama appeared at last year. During her speech, which outlined her plans to combat the AIDS epidemic worldwide, Clinton quoted what she said was her favorite verse: “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:26). In using the verse to comment on the necessity of faith in charity efforts, Clinton said, “I have concluded that works without faith cannot be sustained.”

Hillary Clinton faltered in last night’s debate, and her opponents pounced.
John Edwards accused Clinton of dishonesty, saying voters “deserve a president of the United States that they know will tell them the truth, and won’t say one thing one time and something different at a different time.” She gave him ammunition against her during the debate itself, when she first defended driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants, then said, “I did not say that it should be done.”
Even Barack Obama said he was “confused” by Clinton’s answer. Pundits have been telling Barack Obama to toughen up, and it seems he listened. He questioned the fact that she locked up her private papers in her husband’s presidential library, and he called her secrecy a “problem:” “We have just gone through one of the most secretive administrations in our history.” He said Clinton is part of the political gridlock his campaign is trying to break: “Part of the job of the next president is to break the gridlock and to get Democrats and independents and Republicans to start working together to solve these big problems like health care or climate change or energy.”
Republican candidates Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani then joined the bashing. Mitt Romney said Clinton was “tap dancing so much that I thought I turned it to Dancing with the Stars.” Rudy Giuliani was almost impressed: “By the end of the night, she took different positions in front of the same audience. It was pretty amazing. I mean, in politics I’ve never quite seen that before.”
One candidate came to Clinton’s rescue, however: Bill Richardson, who said Democrats should stay positive.

During a town-hall meeting yesterday, presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani said he thinks Democrats are going to flip-flop again about the Iraq war, this time agreeing that it was the right decision. His comments seemed directed in particular at Hillary Clinton and John Edwards, who both voted for the initial invasion in 2003: “I think they’re going to change their minds. I think the verdict of history is going to be that it was the right decision.” I personally agree that history will prove the Iraq invasion was the right decision, but as far as Democrats like Clinton and Edwards ever concurring? I think that is highly debatable.
