Spirit Day … ’50s Day … Cross-dressing Day?

Every year, students at Pineview Elementary School in Reedsburg, Wisc., take part in “Wacky Week.” You know, those weeks when schools that generally have enough problems all year keeping the students focused allow them to create even more distractions by coming to school dressed up in some sort of costume. On the Friday of Pineview’s Wacky Week, students had the option to dress up either as a senior citizen or as members of the opposite sex, which led to a Christian radio group accusing the school of promoting alternative lifestyles. “The promotion of transgenderism—that was not our purpose,” school district administrator Tom Benson told the Baraboo News Republic. “Our purpose was to have a Wacky Week, mixing in a bit of silliness with our reading, writing and arithmetic.” The students were the ones who had proposed and voted on each day’s attire, but school Principal Tammy Hayes said after all the uproar this year: “I can assure you we will not be having this day [again].”
