Meditation 6.7

On Saturdays, we consider a passage of Scripture:

Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Even youths shall faint and be weary,
and young men shall fall exhausted;
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
they shall walk and not faint.

Isaiah 40:28-31

    This has always been one of my favorite encouraging passages. This past spring, I had my 4 year old music class memorize this exact whole passage. Nothing beats hearing 40 four year olds reciting God’s word!

    I wish I had a dime for ea time an army chaplain has shown up to quote Isaiah at a 530am PT test!
    But then as now I need to hear it and be reminded often.

    I blog today from Morgantown WV. The big news here? The university prez resigned. He awarded an eMBA to the governor’s daughter, a pharmaceutical CEO. She evidently didnt truly earn it. The university’s BOG (board of governors) asked the president to resign. There’s rumors that he might not even be permitted to go back to teaching at West Virginia’s Law School.

    The man will either go into politics, or else assume the Edwin Edwards endowed chair in ethics at the University of Louisiana.

    Okay, ya got me! The part about Louisiana, I made up!

    I’m just relieved to learn that there are no other politically-connected kids receiving unmerited academic credenda from our nation’s universities!

    What a comforting and fortifying promise to claim for one’s own. The lectionary reading for this Sunday (third Sunday after Trinity):ties in beautifully.

    1 St. Peter v. 5.

    ALL of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

    Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

    Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

    But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered awhile, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

    To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

    As I’m finishing up attending graduation parties today, the passage also seems appropriate for our HS grads. Learning to wait, to take strength from the One who so holds and loves us — that does take time. When I was young faith seemed rather simple, but the older I get the more I see that it is this relationship, this faith that keeps me going.
