Does anybody know why the Lutheran Church (MS) pulled the plug on the “Issues, Etc.” radio program (including removing all the archived programs)?. I always like the show and Todd Wilkin. Here is a video about this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8Z6f1Was9w
Does anyone have some ideas of how to deal with hives? My teenager is currently taking benadryl and on prednizone but still is very uncomfortable. She’s tried the cool baking soda soaking bath, but I’m on my way for Aveena.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. It’s a foggy 47 degrees here and she’s complaining it’s too hot outside to relieve her itching.
If anybody cares, I finished that Philip Yancey book, What’s So Amazing About Grace. A little trepidation going in as I saw he was with Christianity Today and after reading one of their mags years ago, I had given them up as being too liberal to be Christian.
Anyway, I found it to be an excellent book, very encouraging. I learned that once again, I have been being elitist in my attitude and needed to take it to the Cross. The guy seems to be quite solid in his understanding of sin and his understanding of the need to see people for what they are.
I came away with a better understanding that God’s Body is bigger than my mind allows and I need to let Him to expand it. A believer is one who believes Christ came, died for our sins, was buried and rose again. A believer is one who sees that he is a sinner, agrees with God on that and desires to turn from his sin, allowing God to pay the price. A believer is not one who agrees with me about trivia like: how to deal with immigration, whether or not to vaccinate, whether gov’t should be larger or smaller, even whether or not aborion should be against the law. I guess people can even be part of CT and still be Christians. I recommend that one anyway, now off to the next…
Michelle, You might ask your doctor to test her for strep. Several years ago our son had hives and his pediatrician tried several things, to no avail. Finally, she said that there might be one other thing to try - that on rare occasions it is a symptom of strep and it turned out to be the case for him. Oddly, he had no other symptoms.
michelle,
I had hives once, and I remember how miserable I was (unable to sleep, unable to concentrate on anything - I think I’d rather go through labor and giving birth again than hives). I was given a steroid, probably prednizone, and by the next day the worst was over. How long has it been?
My sister recommended Aveeno, but a friend of mine who has worked in the healthcare field for thirty years (as well as having more grandchildren than I can count), told me that it was better not to use it. I don’t remember if it was the Aveeno specifically or the bath itself, but she said that just helped whatever is causing the itching to spread to other areas.
Does your daughter know what set it off? I had eaten fajitas the day before, and apparently there was something in the spices that restaurant used that I reacted to. (I had had a previous reaction, though not as bad, to using Hungarian paprika to make goulash.) I can eat other spicy foods, though I don’t care much for hot food, but there’s some chemical in there somewhere I have to be wary of. (I just wish I knew exactly what it is - hard to avoid something when you don’t know what it is.)
Michelle - can’t offer and help with the symptom, but can advise that you should have her checked for an allergy to something. If the hives are an allergic reaction to something, another or repeated exposure(s) could result in a worse reaction.
Justus331,
Thank you for reminding me. One of the most enjoyable times I had in Spain as a college student was visiting Valencia for their Fallas celebration.
Unfortunately just about all the pictures I took back then were on slides, as my father - unable to imagine today’s technology - taught me that slides could always be used to make prints, but there was no way to make a copy of a print if you didn’t have the slide. (I finally found a camera store that can make prints from my old slides, but it costs a lot more than making quality copies of prints at the local supermarket.)
Mumsee,
Off-topic question: What do you wear for a headcovering? I see much diversity in the women I know that do, and I’m always curious. Feel free to ignore me if I’ve overstepped, though.
After years of stumbling across that same section in Corinthians and listening to all the arguments against it, when I decided it was what I was supposed to do and hubby confirmed it, he who likes to shop stopped by a fabric store and bought some remnants. We had decided it was not to draw attention to me or be symbolically white so he chose dark blue. It looks something like an outdated neckerchief style like kids were wearing a few years back. Works for us. Those that know either comment or don’t and those that don’t just think I am obsolete. But if they ask, I tell.
Mumsee,
Thanks–my experience is pretty much the same, although I do buy a few from a great family on Ebay for less than it cost me to buy/sew the first few I had. I choose not to wear a hat since I’m not looking to make or be confused with making a fashion statement, but the first church I worshipped in that practices it mostly does, so then it’s not a fashion statement. I think our congregation just thinks we’re a little (lot?) old-fashioned anyway and chalk it up to that!
Since I am the only one around here I know that does wear one, I was a little concerned as to how to get started and did email several headcovering places but never heard back. Where is your great ebay family or do I just look up headcoverings on ebay and it is that simple (my hubbie does the shopping, did I mention that?)
Mumsee,
She uses a whole string of search terms help you hit on her site. Seems like they include “modest, headcovering, head covering veil scarf band”, etc., so a combo of those should get you there. I do know the seller’s name: Garlands_of_Grace. She has a website, too, but the winning bids on Ebay are usually far lower than her website prices. She does several versions and lengths of kerchief-style coverings, all with no-slip material and nice ties. Some are embroidered or have a little lace edge, but most are very basic. She and her daughters do high-quality work for a great price. She puts up new stuff every week in a range of colors, so if you don’t like this week’s batch, check back next week. I’ve often won at $4.99 plus $2 shipping, but I’ve never had to go higher than 8, which was a splurge for me!
Thanks for checking back to tell us your thoughts about the book! I don’t agree with him 100%, but he gets beneath the surface better than almost any writer I know.
Mumsee,
Okay, I just checked her listings, and she went a little wild for spring–I’ve never seen her have more than one or two with a pattern, but there are a few solid-colored ones mixed in–cream, for example. I have burgundy, pink, cream, and black as solid ones, so maybe she’ll put more up soon.
Peter Leavitt, I saw that article about the lady in Germany, and I just saw a news report about the EU that was quite interesting: the EU is now going to make all their auto records available to their various countries so that if you speed or run a red light and they can’t catch you in Germany because you have French plates, they can now send you the ticket. So much for speeding on the autobahn.
Those who saw my story about my liberal neighbor yelling at me in the street (and assigning me to write an essay): I wrote the essay–three pages–and took it to her, along with an apple “for the teacher.” When she came to the door, she said, “I’m so sorry, Cheryl,” and she hugged me. I told her I forgive her. She laughed about the essay and accepted the apple. I told her there’s a grade slip at the end she needs to return when she is finished reading it (I thought that might make her more likely to read it). Anyway, we talked for a while, and when I left I told her I love her. Happy ending.
I’m thankful for what you got out of Yancey’s book, Mumsee. I’ve been there a long time and have all the denominatational background to match. God is good.
The Answer to today’s quote is John W. Gardner
BTW. Good morning Lynn. Fair winds and following seas shipmate.
Good morning, Joe B. — you win! John Gardner is correct. Enjoy your 12-hour-old urn coffee in a cruise mug, shipmate!…

As much as we think it is about how we draw, it is what God does next that counts, how incorporates our sketch, elaborate or simple into His picture.

TJ, I’ve been listening to KFUO and they did say that Todd was fired. They said that if you call the “Business Office” they’ll answer questions.
Wow. Thanks, Mommy.
Firing is one thing, but to even pull the archives…
He must have really ticked someone off!

Being the 19th of March, let me wish you all a Happy St. Joseph Day. Now, be that as it may, don’t forget to get your holiday zeppoles!!!
Yuuuuuuummy
Mumsee, I will get the book. Good post.

What was the answer to yesterday’s Whirled Views? I don’t think anyone actually made any guesses.
“Faith, without trouble or fighting, is a suspicious faith; for true faith is a fighting, wrestling faith.”
Hulk Hogan?
Arrrghh, I just Googled it and, as an ARP, I’m ashamed to say I didn’t know it.
This German lady had a bad day on the operating table:
Woman Goes for Leg Operation, Gets New Anus Instead>
A German retiree is taking a hospital to court after she went in for a leg operation and got a new anus instead, the Daily Telegraph is reporting.
The woman woke up to find she had been mixed up with another patient suffering from incontinence who was to have surgery on her sphincter.
The clinic in Hochfranken, Bavaria, has since suspended the surgical team.
Now the woman is planning to sue the hospital. She still needs the leg operation and is searching for another hospital to do it.

The Phillipine folk have been duly warned by the article, Easter warning: crucifixion is bad for you.

Bravo to both of you!!!
Ditto Adios, maybe you have a friend. Let us know what grade you get.

When do we get to read the essay? Thanks for going forth.

I e-mailed it to you.
