Provincial NYC

Gravatar  3 Comments

This is something light, kind of.  When discussing why plays that were successful in New York were not always successful in the Rest of the Country, a professor (who was from New York) said, “New Yorkers are just as provincial as the rest of America.  They’re just the only ones who don’t know it.”  This is true, I think.  What’s the other quote from some movie?  Something like this: “All those who don’t live in New York must, in some sense, be kidding.”  New Yorkers believe they live in the Center of the Universe, and they do: but it’s not the only universe, and it’s not my universe.  Take, for example, this bit of cheeky video journalism, which is not really news, but it’s further evidence of how much is foreign to New Yorkers.

I think New Yorkers are more provincial than the rest of us. I’m sure I know way more about New York then the average New Yorker know about Birmingham.

I don’t get Woody Allen movies. New York…

I’m just as sure that many Americans dn’t get L.A. movies. Since I worked in “South Central” for 30 years, I get some things that pass over the heads of others.

Last November we drove through and stopped for breakfast in what was left of Greensburg, KS. We had no idea what an F-5 tornado meant.

I know what a 4.8 earthquake feels like.

These experiences are some of what makes up “provincialism.”

  3. Yes. New Yorkers are provincial.

Most have never met another person or New Yorker that ever voted for any Bush for President.
