Facebook fatigue

Gravatar  8 Comments

Newsflash!  Apparently, it’s impossible to be friends with all of your friends on Facebook.

The average length of time users spend on all of the top three sites is on the slide. Bebo, MySpace and Facebook all took double-digit percentage hits in the last months of 2007. December could perhaps be forgiven as a seasonal blip when people see their real friends and family, but the trend was already south.

Get the numbers here.  Has your employment of Web 2.0 levelled off, or declined?

I’m a late adopter. Now that it’s going out of fashion, maybe it’s safe for me to try it….

  2. The only time I was ever on MySpace or anything like that was to look at some pix of my grandson that his mom put on there.

  3. I’m a late arrival to Facebook (this past September), so I’m still finding people I know. Even once that levels off, I imagine I’ll check it a few times a week, but spend less time on the applications, games, etc. offered.

As the number of applications grows, my use of Facebook declines. It used to be a good tool for sharing pictures, connecting with friends across campus, etc. Now, it’s in essence a shallow gaming site, where you can spend hours SuperPoking people without saying anything of depth. I still love the free photo storage, but the applications just annoy me.

As usual I’m behind the trend. I have only recently started thinking about getting on Facebook. I haven’t decided to take the plunge yet. I got into the blogging thing in 2007, maybe Facebook will be my new thing in 2008. Time will tell.

  6. What is this “Facebook” everybody is talking about?

Daughter showed me her facebook site but it was too complicated for me so I will stick with my myspace where I can see daughter’s pics and keep track of her friends. But sometimes I go weeks without remembering to check it.

  8. Chas,
It’s a “social networking site”–the phrase you might see in the media. Imagine a high school yearbook that had a few pages for every student to express themselves rather than just a small picture and some pages for autographs. It allows me to build a page with personal information (as much as I’m willing to display), photos, notes from friends, play games (like Scrabble) with friends in other places, etc. Only people you allow can see your profile/page, so no creep/stranger has access to my info. I don’t think I can even link to it to show you a sample because of the security design.

I use it to keep up with people since we move so much (friends, people I knew in high school, former colleagues, students, etc.) Tim keeps up with friends from seminary, etc.
