Oprah = traitor?
Not all fans are pleased with talk show host Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement of Barack Obama for president–some have even gone as far as to call her a traitor:
It started with a message on her website entitled “Oprah is a traitor” and rapidly expanded to include several discussions that attracted hundreds of comments.
In the original post, a reader called austaz68 said she “cannot believe that women all over this country are not up in arms over Oprah’s backing of Obama. For the first time in history we actually have a shot at putting a woman in the White House and Oprah backs the black MAN. She’s choosing her race over her gender.”
In a subsequent comment, 2nurselady wrote: “I don’t think Oprah is a ‘traitor’, but I do think she may be alienating a lot of her fans.”
Others have accused Winfrey of racism for siding with Obama when such a well qualified woman as Clinton was running.
As a highly influential women’s advocate, is Oprah a “traitor” to her primarily female followers to endorse a man over a strong female candidate?

Shrillary, well-qualified?
I don’t think so. She’s trying to ride Slick Willie’s coattails, plain and simple.
I always find these topics slightly absurd. People should support the candidate with the best qualifications and leadership qualities, not the “right” race or sex.
Mmmmm Hmmmmm
This illustrates the shallowness of the sheep who follow these people. More than slightly absurd if you ask me. Positively stupid.
So, these people want Oprah to choose between her race and her gender. How shallow! It doesn’t even make sense! As if a vote should be decided on those two things alone. Why can’t she just vote for the person she wants to be president?
The posters who call Oprah a “traitor” have to get a grip on reality.
(Laura, don’t even get me started on Shrillary! I hope Bill tanks her.)
Wow wouldnt it be nice if folks cast ballots based on voting record, or the content of the candidates character and not the color of his/her skin.
Grow up yall! Lets get back to that colorblind society to which Dr King eloquently summoned us.
It’s idiotic henhouse kerfuffles like this that make you question the 19th amendment.
Sounds like media hype and political wrangling/positioning/manipulating.
She can endorse whomever she pleases and not be a traitor.
What tripe!
(But we are going to see and hear a lot of this sort of thing, and have to purpose not to be swayed by sensationalism. It only encourages such tactics.
)
#5: Lets get back to that colorblind society
Were were never there. ‘Scuse me, I have to go get a friend out of jail. He was charged with a DWB.
Driving while Black.
Per “Shrillary” … are you two still in eighth grade?
That might be the single worst ramification of a Clinton victory, seeing the Clinton Hate Machine rev back up to full speed.
It seems like Oprah, a Democrat of course, is between a rock and a hard place. She has three main candidates she can endorse, or she can keep quiet.
She can endorse a black man, and get in trouble with feminists. She can endorse a white woman and get in trouble with other black people. Or she can endorse a white man and make all of her followers angry.
I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she endorsed Obama partly because she agrees with him. Partly, of course, she endorsed him because he’s a black person from Illinois, and thus probably in her extended circle of friends. So what?
I think the Republicans should graciously allow Democrats to field two presidential candidates this year. Then, while the Democrats fight over whether to vote for a black person or a woman, the Republicans can bring home the presidency.
Excellent post at #11, Cheryl. Oprah obviously picked Barack because he best reflects her own political views — in addition to the fact he (like she) is popular with those who like to mindlessly listen.
And this is exactly why identity politics are BAD!
And this why I roll my eyes whenever the local Democrat Party here in Dubuque (and elsewhere I’ve lived) urges voters to vote straight-ticket.
Sometimes Luke and I agree.
My wife is watching Oprah now. But she is not going to vote for Obama or Hillary. I really doubt that so-called celebraties have much effect.
I like to listen to Paul Harvey, but strongly reject his ideas of using food for fuel, as well some other positions he has taken. I even disagree with Rush on occasion.

I like this idea!
SteveG: have you listened to Hillary’s voice. She’s shrill. Hence, Shrillary. It’s got nothing to do with “hate.” Lighten up — it’s a long way to November.
She can either be a racist or a sexist. Great dilemma there (and part of why I hate identity politics so).

Amen, amen and amen.
