Good morning!
Today’s quote is from a play:
“I didn’t marry you because you were perfect. I didn’t even marry you because I loved you. I married you because you gave me a promise. That promise made up for your faults. And the promise I gave you made up for mine. Two imperfect people got married and it was the promise that made the marriage. And when our children were growing up, it wasn’t a house that protected them; and it wasn’t our love that protected them - it was that promise.”

Wake up everybody! It’s spring already!
Oh,who said that quote? It’s right there on the skin of my teeth:0
Happy spring Chas! Happy Holy Thursday! Even though it is only 5 a.m. here
From Thornton Wilder, The Skin of Our Teeth answer to today’s quote
I’m awake. I just don’t have anything to say yet.
If today is really the first day of Spring, I would love to see some spring weather. Winter coats and scarves are getting old.
We had wonderful weather this week. We tried to fly a kite. It’s in a tree now.
Today is the 1st day of Spring and it snowed here last night in North East Ohio.
And from what I hear, southwest Ohio is going underwater. Any road within 200 yards of a creek is probably closed for high water.
The weather here in France really isn’t that bad, just chilly and windy downtown.
Happy Spring, Chas! and everyone else! It’s windy and chilly here in NJ because it rained heavily yesterday and it’s blowing out to sea, but once we dry out, it’s going to be a beautiful day.
The weather forecast here is dark, with increasing scattered light and a high of 65.
My wife says that to me at least twice a week.
At least it’s sunny, here. Cold. But sunny.
I always thought the 1st day of Spring was the 21st of March! Oh well……
NJLawyer, yeah just what ole JJ needs ……a storm from your place to mine in RI. haahaahaaa
Hey, I just keep telling myself: The Red Sox are coming, The Red Sox are coming, there’s no place like home…..no place like home….
Joe B. wins again! While you’re enjoying your urn coffee, go check out the Something Light video I posted, produced by the USN VAW-116 Sunkings!

Lynn - I think adios actually won, by one minute. See post #2.
adios - your forecast sounds like a George Carlin forecast (Al Sleet, the hippy weatherman).
Travis, could be Al Sleet, I forgot about him. I actually thought is was an old Bob Crane schtick, but my brian is foggy at that hour.
Now that the sun is up it is cloudy. Sort of May gray in March.
“Al Sleet, the hippy-dippy weatherman, with all the hippy-dippy weather, man.”
Ohio is washing away. Check this out: http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?ID=404229&Category=9&subCategoryID=0
Good stuff, StuBob.
I once memorized an entire Al Sleet bit for a class play. Carlin also did a good hyperactive sportscaster - Biff Barf. But Al Sleet was epic.
I believe I could still recite the Seven Words You Can’t Say on Television, in order.
Not proud, just sayin’…..
¡Felices Pascuas a todos mis amigos aquí!
(For the monolinguals here: Happy Resurrection Day [I don’t like the other word] to all my friends here!) Leaving for Iowa in a few hours. Be back Monday! (At least I get it off!)
About Carlin, now days, I just know him as Filmore.
Wow.
Just wow.
How did yesterday come and go at WMB without one mention of the five year anniversary of our invasion of Iraq?
Okay then, consider Ron Paul’s comments on the 10th Anniversary of the War on Iraq.
(No, that’s not a typo. Read his brief commentary and you’ll quickly understand.)
TJ, I see on another blog (an LCMS one) that the Issues, etc. archives are back on the KFUO site. Still no indication why it was canceled, though,
Cheryl D delivered a well written essay to her neighbor. I hope the neighbor reads it and considers it and returns it with a grade so they can continue the discussion. Cheryl is off to babyland for her sister finally.
TJ, there’s also this site to sign a virtual petition to the LCMS to restore the show:

Mumsee - I’ve noticed a couple times in the past few months, you’ve mentioned not liking church women’s meetings.
I don’t know what the meetings at your church are like, but the ones we have have been such a blessing to me & the other women. Through the years I have learned so much from what older women have shared. Many times a woman has opened up about a tough situation in her life, & been encouraged with counsel & prayer. We learn much about God’s faithfulness & love, & also learn about each other.
Because I’ve been so blessed by the various brunches, lunches, & Bible studies we’ve had, I’m sad that you haven’t found that in your current church. Do you have close friends to confide in & pray with you, & you for them?
Justus331, you made me laugh. It’ll pass! It’s sunny now, but still chilly. I’m with you on the Red Sox (though I can’t say that HERE!) I always thought spring came on the 21st, too, but this is leap year.
Where have you been?
Karen O,
Thank you for your care and concern. Yes, I do indeed have some of those friendships. There is one woman in particular here that we can look at each other from across the room and know that one or the other needs to talk and get back on track. We are pretty good at keeping each other focused on Him rather than our personal difficulties though we don’t downplay those, we help each other see them in the big picture. She is just one of many delightful women friends I have in this church, any of whom I could call on in an instant and have immediate fellowship and help or they can call me and recieve the same.
Back when the kids were young, I thought I was supposed to enjoy those women’s gatherings so diligently attended Bible studies, military wives coffes, women’s shopping expeditions and tours, etc, in the hope of finding whatever I was supposed to be finding. It never clicked. Eventually I realized that those meetings are wonderful for many but for some of us, it is just not going to happen. Perhaps I just get overwhelmed by the crowds. I do very well with one or two at a time but not so well in the big crush venues. I believe Pauline and a couple others on here have mentioned the same difficulty so I know I am not alone.
For many women, they are a wonderful thing. For some, I fear they can be damaging ( whether because they misunderstand or misapply the teaching or whether it is just wrong teaching, some use them as guidance to abandon their husbands and children, maybe not outwardly but inwardly, and yes I personally know actual cases of this), and for a few, we just don’t see the point. And that is okay, as long as we are fellowshipping and have a friend or two, we do pretty well.
Maybe when the kids are grown, I will try again. Wait, they were and now we have started over, never mind. Anyway, thanks for caring, you and the others have helped me more than you can know through some tough overseas living and I count you as beloved sisters and brothers, but the real ones with real hugs are ever so much more satisfying!
Yesterday I was called a racist for my comments about the black community and its many problems. I knew it wouldn’t be long before a lefty did so. They have no self control, no shame and can never be satisfied - my definition of terrorists.
Just saying the word black today will get you branded a racist, if you are white, by the left.
There is no dialog or debate allowed on this issue. While much of both is needed to fix these problems, along with some soul seaching and character building, Whitey is at fault and blacks are blameless - the debate is over and you are a racist.
This example is the reason why reasonable, thoughtful, willing, non racist, conservative Christian whites are no longer are willing to participate in helping to solve these many problems in the black community. Sadly, without our help, these problems will likely never get solved.
It has always been the left’s inability to understand and admit that the reason these problems exist is in a large part because of them, their socialist ideas, misplaced compassion and their unwillingness to do the things it takes to solve problems successfully.
So the problems persist and get worse - yet the left blames me for the continuing worsening sewage and they call me a racist at every opportunity - even if they are not black.
Blacks, who have not been slaves for 140 years, are still obviously slaves to someone or something. The question is, who is their slave master. Here is a hint - it ain’t the llamas
When someone tells you they are the only ones qualified and willing to look out for your best interests and everyone else trying to help is evil - a little red flag should run up your brain pole. I advise all to test this assumption for truth because sometimes folks are really trying to do so and sometimes they are not.
The test is simple. Look at their results over the last 1,5,10,20 and 40 years. In this case, the solutions applied have had horrible results by any standard. So, I ask you. Who is at fault for this? Once again, it ain’t the llamas.
Don’t forget, you are a racist and it is all your fault and you will be punished, especially if you are innocent. Still, you can’t give up the fight just because a lefty whack job calls you a racist. They have never been right about anything - no, not ever. The problems can’t be solved until you make them your problems - you may be the only one who can solve them - even if you are not black or a lefty.
They sure haven’t had any luck solving them and the place to start is asking why this is so. But don’t discuss it here unless you have thick skin and don’t mind being called a racist.
Here is another hint. Once blacks understand that you can never trust your life or money to lefties maybe, just maybe, they won’t be so dead and broke
Mumsee and Karen O.
Regarding women’s meetings I’m afraid I fall mostly on Mumsee’s side. Many times women’s meetings lack substance. I have many women friends and if you’ve read my blog about the SPTs you know that I am aiming for a higher level of interaction than is possible in many church women’s groups. I think I come by this honestly as my mom is the same way. I was my dad’s buddy growing up so I got to hang around the men’s discussions and I found them much more interesting. Part of it for me is the fact that I’m single and most women attending the women’s groups have husbands, children, grandchildren etc. They don’t really “get” my life. It’s better now that I’m a missionary because now they figure I have an excuse to be single.
Lynn,
Great quote. If I were married I would have it framed.
I guess maybe what makes a difference is that our church is small, so our ladies’ gatherings are more intimate. Just as some large churches have small groups, it may be a good idea for larger women’s groups to break up into smaller groups, too.
Karen O,
Our church is small, thirty to fifty people generally. Maybe it is not the number so much as the rebellious side of me does not want to follow a program but prefers to let the conversation go where it needs to at the time. I don’t know. I have been in big churches and little churches of many denominations and it is just not my cup of tea.
Last summer I did get together a time or two with small groups of friends for a picnic in the park, complete with lace table cloth, crystal vases, good dishes, and delicassies. We had fun.
Karen O,
If you know somebody in your church or down the street or at the store, that you think is not in fellowship and could be, invite her! She may just be waiting for that invitation and a friend to speak up and say, “I will take you” or “I will meet you out front” or whatever. But if she declines don’t take it as though she is saying you are bad for attending. It just might not be how God is growing her.
I was thinking of this conversation as I was planting some veggies a few minutes ago. They are in egg cartons and will go out after frost time. Some require six to eight weeks head start. Some four and some should just be started outside and not moved. God has different designs for each of us and we do best by following the plan He has for us as individuals, not necessarily for our neighbor.
Thanks again for your caring heart and for bringing this up. As we both know, there are lurkers reading this and hopefully, they will be encouraged to give women’s groups a try if they never have. But if they find it is not for them, they will know they are not alone. No guys need apply though they might consider men’s groups. Our guys haul firewood for each other and go llama packing and fishing.
The seasons change roughly on March 21, September 21, December 21, and June 21. However, they are actually based on astronomy, the first day of summer, for example being the summer solstice. That means that some years they fall on the 20th and other years on the 21st. My husband I are especially cognizant of this because my birthday is December 21 and his is today, March 20.
I’m a little late to the party, but great quote to start things off.
Happy spring, everyone! It’s about 40 here and very damp and windy today, but at least the snow is melting.
Has anyone “seen” RobHays lately? Just wondering how his job search is going…
Kim, if you’re around, how’s your friend Steve, the one who had that accident and was waiting for surgery?
My experience with women’s groups - or any groups of people, really - is that the way I get to know people is by doing things together, as opposed to just getting together for the purpose of getting to know each other. I have gotten to know other women through Bible studies, helping with work around the house or around the church, helping with children (my own or theirs or someone else’s), or working on some other kind of project together.
Once I know people, I enjoy getting together just to enjoy each other’s company. But I still prefer to do it in small groups. When over a dozen or so people get together, it’s pretty hard to get everyone involved in the conversation unless you break up into separate conversations - and then it gets hard to hear with several conversations going on nearby.
The wheels are coming off the Obama campaign. Two polls show him trailing Hillary in the upcoming PA primary by 22 and 29 points. And now WorldNetDaily is reporting that in July of last year, Obama’s preacher put a Hamas manifesto in the church bulletin.
Llama, I read your post and you are obviously still very upset. For what it’s worth, I do not think you are a racist. My approach on these things is one I learned from the judge I worked for. He always said that in his business (judging), 50% of the people will always hate you (the losing side). Once you understand that, it won’t bother you. It’s the way it is. That’s how I look at liberals/leftists.
Our liberal/leftist friends did not answer the questions about how a Christian minister can preach hate — they are too much into politics and they have no understanding of what this man is preaching. The truth is, no matter what the issue, if people would just follow Christ’s admonitions — even if they don’t want to believe in him — they’d live longer, happier more fulfilling lives. But it’s easier to do what they want to do and make excuses instead. Don’t let politics rule you the way it rules their lives.
Night Train, you are a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for keeping me informed.
I hope the editors will create a new thread for this, but in the meantime I’m putting it here because I think it’s fascinating:
Mikhail Gorbachev admits he is a Christian.
Thanks SteveG. I don’t know, from the article, about the extent of his commitment. However, I can’t say I’m surprised.
Mumsee - Yes, I have invited ladies through the years. My mom has been very blessed.
One of the specific things I’ve liked is that we are not “stuck” to a program. The leaders we’ve had have been wise & insightful enough to know when a conversation needs to be steered back to the topic & when we need to go with the flow.
I’m not a gardener, but several women I know are, & they often use analogies like yours.
#40: NT, how much are people going to care? Everyone is so enamored with Obama; it’s like watching the Manchurian Candidate sometimes. He threw his grandmother under the bus in order to defend Wright. I just don’t get it.
He threw his grandmother under the bus in order to defend Wright. I just don’t get it.
I think you don’t, TJ. His point in mentioning his grandmother is that there are still racial tensions in America and even well-meaning people, white or black, aren’t immune to them.
I fear his speech may have been too good. It was written with the assumption that the audience is made up of adults capable of understanding complex situations, but I am not sure that is something one can count on.
I don’t believe Barrack Obama has a chance to be president. I thought it was scary that the Secret Service pulled security at one of his rallies at Dallas where there were more than 17,000 people. They ordered, over the objections of the police, that the metal detectors be dismantled and too not check people for weapons. When asked who gave the order, they said it came from higher up and that’s all they would say.
Then Fox trolled through hundreds of hours of sermons by the pastor of his church to come up with a few minutes of seemingly fiery rhetoric. He is incredibly disrespected by Sean Hannality, but is obvious he is a very respectful person when holding the respectful discussion with Allen Combs:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNTGRL0OJWQ&feature=related
And now, today, to find out that Department of State employees have illegally been trolling through Obama’s personal passport files and other personal files. Not Hillary’s, not McCain’s. AND they have been doing it since January and the head of the State Department only found out about it today. A full day after the Secretary of State was notified.
I can’t imagine a more qualified candidate. Brilliant taught constitutional law. When was the last time we had a president that taught constitutional law? When was the first?
America got the worst president ever because they ignored his sordid past and believed him when he waved the hate gays and I’m moral banner. Finally, we get a candidate who is not perfect, but is head and shoulders above anyone we have seen for years and years and he is either being set up to be killed, accused of guilt by association or being singled out in a way that has seldom happened before. Well, he tried to run on a platform of inclusion and the content of character but go tripped up by race.
I suspect future generations will see Obama as the one that got away. We will probably have Hillary, who gives every indication of being bi polar, secretive. She has no grand plans or vision for the country. She is kind of smart, but no genius.
Or we can get McCain. He will appoint more inept people than Bush. He has already demonstrated zero understanding of the people of Iraq or of the war. He knows nothing about the economy. He has no vision, no plans. I suspect the first day in office, he will say, “Now what”?
I suspect Obama will become disillusioned with the ever-growing divide within the United States. Things will get even more difficult for the US as the religious right attempts to expand its power. They are damaging every institution. Other indications are the colleges and universities they build which are always tier four, the lowest rated or unrated because they prefer the mystical over courses in the many fields of science. Their ongoing attempt to rewrite the US Constitution to include discrimination. This is a sign of the oncoming darkness that is spearheaded by the religious. Of course they can’t see it. God is on their side. They have memorized verses and script. Eventually, the secular will have to take a stand against religious intrusion and that’s when I expect to see actual violence. Everything that has happened in Iraq has been told to over and over again in history. There is nothing new there. This seems to be going in the same direction. We are trading vision for stubborn. As the religions celebrate Bush, they celebrate incompetence and ignorance and mediocrity.
Jesus, protect us from your followers.
Chas at #43: Thanks SteveG. I don’t know, from the article, about the extent of his commitment. However, I can’t say I’m surprised.
That’s a spiritual biography I’d love to read. I hope someone good will write one, or even Gorbachev himself.
SteveG, he did it again (with his grandmother) yesterday, referring to her on a Philly radio program as a “typical white person.” Sorry, but that’s just disrespectful to do that to a family member in public.
