Something Light: The crazy things parents do

22 Comments by Kristin Chapman January 29 9:04 AM

Here’s a fun story about a dad who wanted to see if he could get his infant daughter photographed with every presidential candidate–both Republican and Democrat. He was successful, and has the photo slide show to prove it.

Some might think he was crazy to go to all that trouble–which included tracking the candidates all over the state of New Hampshire–but most parents do crazy things at one time or another for or with their kids. What stories can you share?

Something Light: Fortune Cookies

My favorite part of dining at a Chinese restaurant? The fortune cookie that concludes the meal. So I was a bit surprised to learn that the famous cookies originated from Japan, not China.

[Researcher Yasuko Nakamachi’s] prime pieces of evidence are the generations-old small family bakeries making obscure fortune cookie-shaped crackers by hand near a temple outside Kyoto. She has also turned up many references to the cookies in Japanese literature and history, including an 1878 image of a man making them in a bakery–decades before the first reports of American fortune cookies.

Whatever the history, as long as Chinese restaurants still serve them and I can have fun reading my fortune, I’ll be happy. What was the best fortune you ever found in a fortune cookie? I’ll get us started.
