Overreacting?

52 Comments by Kristin Chapman December 18 9:34 AM

When a 10-year-old Florida girl brought a knife to school so she could cut her steak lunch up, school officials took quick action: They called the sheriff.

“Anytime there’s a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we aggressively report it because we don’t want to take any chances, regardless,” said Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian.

After deputies were unable to contact the fifth grader’s parents, they arrested her and took her to the county’s juvenile assessment center. Suspended from school for 10 days, she now faces a felony charge for the possession of a weapon on school property. Based on the harmless nature of the incident, did school officials overreact, or was their response necessary in today’s society?
