Good morning!

Today’s quote is from a stateswoman: “Democracy is necessary to peace and to undermining the forces of terrorism.”

  1. Benazir Bhutto. “Democracy is, first and foremost, a spiritual force, it is built upon a spiritual basis. . . . And in the long run only the church can provide that basis.” (Harry Truman)

    For the record:
    1. We live in a Republic, not a Democracy.
    2. Democracy presupposes a moral society.
    3. Democracy only works if over 50% of the people are correct over 50% of the time.
    4. I like dogs.
    5. Radical Islamic Terrorists are against any form of government that does not acknowledge the will of Allah as the supreme power within their brand of doctrine behind the imposed theocracy. Both Democracy and Republic are out of the question because the “supreme” power of those systems is the populus en mass.

  3. Today on my blog I have posted a short piece on the film Fitna, produced by Geert Wilders of the Netherlands. Please stop by and read it, if you have the time and the interest.

    Darth Truk at #2:

    1. We live in a Republic, not a Democracy.

    I think both terms apply.

Democracy: government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

Republic: a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them.

(Both definitions from the Random House Unabridged Dictionary via dictionary.com.)

The political party founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in 1792 was called the Democratic-Republican party (its counterpart was the Federalist party), signifying the presence of both republican and democratic elements in the structure of the government.

    2. Democracy presupposes a moral society.

It presupposes an ethical society willing to think beyond narrow self-interest to the greater good of society. This is why pure democracy (where citizens decide everything by direct vote) is difficult to maintain, while representational democracy is workable, if often contentious.

    3. Democracy only works if over 50% of the people are correct over 50% of the time.

That presumes every question has two answers, one correct and one incorrect. Often, however, questions of government have no right or wrong answer, just competing notions of what’s better.

    4. I like dogs.

    Dogs rule.

    5. Radical Islamic Terrorists are against any form of government that does not acknowledge the will of Allah as the supreme power within their brand of doctrine behind the imposed theocracy. Both Democracy and Republic are out of the question because the “supreme” power of those systems is the populus en mass.

    Agreed.

Coolest product seen on a commercial in Llamadom this week - Kinoki Foot Pads.

Just stick the pads to the bottom of your feet while you sleep and you are cured of anything that ails you. These things cure everything from heavy metal poisoning, cancers of all kinds, all heart problems, weight problems, blindness and erectile dysfunction to name just a few of its many powers.

You humans are really smart medical scientists.

Thanks to those of you with congrats for my daughter being elected student body president.

To prove that no good deed goes unpunished, we also got her SAT scores the same day of her election. Momma and Daughter Llama were wise not to tell me what they were until late last night since they were not good enough to get her into a bad trade school, much less a community college with a 38th percentile in critical reading. Math and writing were just barely average.

As an ALP straight A student ranked in top 2% of her class with a 4.5 GPA on a 4 point scale, she must be a classic over achiever or a horrible test taker.

At least she has another shot at taking the SAT again and all is not lost :-)

    Llama,

She clearly has a future in politics, that grade stuff is irrelevant.

  8. Llama,
    Speaking of cool advertised products…
My wife has discovered the Ped Egg, and is very impressed. For those with dry cracked foot skin that just won’t come off, this thing is a miracle cure.

    #8 Make It Man

Yeah, the Ped Egg is a micro plane for the foot. I’m sure it works great to zest citrus and grating nutmeg too. Just watch the hoof and mouth cross contamination :-)

  11. Llama,
Would the school(s) she’s interested in accept the ACT? In my experience, unless you already know she’s a horrible test-taker in every situation, students like her tend to do better on the ACT. While the format is the same, the approach of the questions is different, measuring more what’s she learned than its application. It’s far more concrete than the SAT as a result.

Congratulations on raising a fine young girl!

OK, folks, somebody has to say this.

    Right?

    Hillary Clinton.

    Before she realized she mis-spoke.

    About being a stateswoman.

Disclaimer: No offense intended. Just having a little fun.

    Disclaimer: I’ve been wrong before.

Disclaimer: If I live long enough, I’ll be wrong again.

Disclaimer: I realize it won’t have to be that much longer.

    #7 Mumsee,

I hope she dose not go into politics, unless she really is loser of course :-)

    #11 Cameron,

She will take the ACT too from what I hear.

Maybe it is a good thing that some liberal schools quit using these tests for admissions :-)

She already has a scholastic scholarship to any AZ college but has her sights set on an out out of state engineering school.

At least her college education may end up costing less than anticipated with her scores since the higher the SAT, the higher the cost of higher education :-)

Congratulations anyway, Llama, on raising a baby llama who looks great on a blog.

I assume she has reasons as to why she didn’t score well. One friend of ours actually fell asleep while taking her SATs, which is what caused her parents to do an all-out assault on her health concerns. After months of testing, it turned out she had Lyme disease. They don’t think they would have been so agressive in seeking an answer if it hadn’t been for the weird test situation.

She retook the test, went to Whitworth College and is living happily ever after as a professional athlete.

  18. I would like to ask prayer for a friend of mine, my manager at work. She was just told that they are cutting her hours in half. She is a single mom of 4 - only one left at home graduating this spring. Therefore, she is the sole breadwinner and cannot live on 20 hours per week. She will be seeking new employment, but we all know the market right now. Please keep her in your prayers. She is a strong Christian, and trusts that God has a plan here, but it’s scary. Pray that she finds a new job quickly in a field she can enjoy and make a difference in. She’s really a great person, and I’m sad to see this happen to her. I’m also concerned for my own employment, since I see the office in a downward spiral with her gone. Thanks for your prayers.

Didn’t know whether to post this here or on the parents pray thread. A thirteen year old from our community broke her neck (C1) in an ATV accident this past week. No mobility problems so that is good, she is in a HALO. No insurance so this should be rather big financially, they welcome assistance if folks are interested. Sterling Bank in Kooskia, Idaho is taking the donations.

This, of course, introduces the same questions. Should the other child be taken away? Aren’t these parents awful to do that to their poor child? Etc. But the fact of the matter is, a lot of kids ride ATV’s and many are not hurt, some are. These parents love their children deeply and spend a lot of time with them, working and playing. It is sad and the family is hurting. Please pray for them.

I’m trying to clean house today and I’m having a bad floor day. My vacuum cleaner’s not working and I broke my mop. Maybe God is trying to tell there is something important on the floor that I shouldn’t mop or suck up.

“At least her college education may end up costing less than anticipated with her scores since the higher the SAT, the higher the cost of higher education.”

That’s what I try to tell my husband every time our son does something weird or not so smart. Look at the bright side we are probably not going to have to pay for MIT.

This morning I was listening to the podcast of Albert Mohler’s radio show from Friday, which was about Harlan Coben’s New York Times article on using spyware to check on your children’s internet use. During the show (at approximately the 25:30 mark), he mentions Harrison’s post about this article from last Tuesday, and he quotes from Mumsee’s comment (No. 15). Cool.

    Kbells,

I hear Phoebies College for Aliens Online is pretty cheap and you can even get an advanced degree in a couple of weeks.

Kyle, I read your questions — excellent. Food for thought. I wish that those who are condemning the film would answer them.

  25. Frank in Phoenix - I just now read your posts # 59-61 regarding the drinking issue (Wine and Kids at the Table) - as always I appreciate so much your insight into issues. You have a gift of clarifying many topics!

Since that thread is a few days old, I thought I’d post a note to you here.

Mickey - Thanks for the heads-up on that Spyware post. Cool is right. :-)
