The race for No. 2
Now NY will not only have its first black governor, but (as far as I know) its first legally blind governor, and the most radical pro-gay marriage governor of any state in the union.
What a profound statement of responsibility, humility, and sorrow. I’m sorry Mr. Spitzer fell, but I commend him for this apology.
I’ve never heard of him before this. But according to Rush, he gets what he diserves. “Chickens came home…” He says Spitzer had to be Nifong’s role model as attorney general.
I do have to acknowledge that it is one of the better statements I have seen of late from someone who did something wrong. It was not the ‘psuedo-apology’ we so often see now.
I did not like the way he conducted himself as AG or Governor. I am not sorry to see him hoist on his own petard. But I have to give him some props for a good ‘mea culpa’ resignation statement.
It does sound pretty repentent, and if this were just a one-time mistake I would have a lot of sympathy for the guy. What saddens me is the LENGTH of time he was doing this and how deliberate he was. Makes you wonder what else he might be capable of to get what he wants.
John M - Those who followed the prosecutorial abuses Spitzer championed while AG of NY would not be surprised at anything that might have come to light. The guy was self-righteous hubris personified.
I couldn’t be more pleased about Spitzer’s downfall. His legal proceedings against those whom he regarded as Wall Street malefactors , especially Greenberg and Grasso, proved him to be a grandstander and a cruel tyrant. He deserves zero sympathy. He is basically a liberal Democrat with a mere Princeton degree suffering the illusion that he was above the law. Good riddance.

Your tenses are all screwed up, Peter: Spitzer suffered the illusion that he was above the law, but reality has taken a bite. He said: ” Over the course of my public life, I have insisted, I believe correctly, that people, regardless of their position or power, take responsibility for their conduct. I can and will ask no less of myself.”
Just caught a glimpse of his wife’s face on Drudge just now…
Whew! That look could fry chickens… It’s saying to me “You sorry scum-sucking lowlife, cowardly weakling, I’m gonna cut you off, big time.” There’s so much in that look it would take me all day to describe it.
I wouldn’t want to be Spitzer for all the money in the world.
