Good morning from Santa Barbara on the lovely Pacific!
Today’s quote is from an American statesman: “What can we do with the western coast, a coast of 3,000 miles, rockbound, cheerless, uninviting, and not a harbor on it? What use have we for such a country? I will never vote one cent from the public treasury to place the Pacific Ocean one inch nearer.”

Never heard it, but I like the way it’s worded.
It’s a happy day: Cool and fresh in Central Florida, hubby took a day off, son is home from school after a quadruple wisdom tooth extraction.
Will spend a few hours doing two (beginner) watercolor projects. Might see a movie at the theater tonight.
What are you all doing this fine day/weekend?
My son is on his spring break from grad school at Central MI U, starting today. I’m picking him up at the airport at lunchtime and planning his favorite meal for this evening.
It looking like it will be warm enough for the park this weekend. Or a bike ride to the creek.
John Adams?
Fine day? I guess so. It looks like the snow and ice last night weren’t enough to close or delay schools, so I need to go scrape the car and allow extra time for driving.
Weekend plans: prepare for and teach Sunday School lesson (Saturday evening and Sunday morning), and Cub Scout Blue and Gold Banquet Sunday afternoon.
I don’t know who said that, but I remember Barry Goldwater wanted to cut the country off (I think it was at the Mississippi, but maybe not) and let the East Coast float out to sea.
Oh the not always so wise Daniel Webster.
He apparently had never been to San Diego, Long Beach, San Fran or Seattle. And what would he think now of CA having one of the world’s largest economies?
Chas, we have a real problem with erosion in Jersey. We lose “land” every year. Will that help?
Greetings from Flyover Land on the lovely Ohio!
“not a harbor on it?” What does he call San Francisco Bay? Puget Sound?
NJL, I don’t personally have anything against New Jersey. The people I’ve known from there have been nice guys.
But I don’t think that’s what Goldwater had in mind.
A new guy started here at work today and his name is AJ. I keep wanting to ask him if he is the “Real” AJ or some fake impostor.
Boy he sure called that one wrong. I’ve been all the way up that coast, From San Diego on into Canada, and it’s got some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve ever seen.
I’m going to rent a movie tonight, then tomorrow finish taking out and hauling off that pine tree that seems to be the problem with our septic system.
Then I’ll see about cleaning up the shop, and turning some wood into something useful. I’m nearly done with a friends project, and can’t wait to start on some others that have been hanging over my head…
MiM.
I watched The Guardian with my son (netflix).
It may be an older movie, but I really liked it. So, I’ll go ahead and recommend it.
It’s about Coast Guard rescue swimmers.
I’m still curious about the mysterious disappearing post from yesterday and the fact that the story doesn’t appear anywhere. The official answer here was that it was “posted prematurely.” How can that be? Did it happen, or did it not? Did Patrick have a premonition? Odd.
This morning, as it was such a fine balmy day (the mud roads were still frozen so probably about 32), we woke the kids up early and attempted a bike ride to school. The long way, on the highway, five miles, as the gravel road has a herd of cows on it usually and we did not want the kids attempting to ride through that. Anyway, due to mechanical malfunctions on his bike, littlest and I came back after only a mile and drove in on the gravel road. The cows were out. I picked up one daughter a little short of the school (she was late) but the other made it on time. I gave hub a ride home. He was happy to see me.
Tonight, is a basketball game and a friend spending the night followed by two basketball games and a practice, a cub scout museum trip, taking the girls to spend the night with a friend, and another friend spending the night. Empty nesting is a thing of the past.
Some friends were watching our struggles with adoption so decided to go about it the old fashioned way and announced their pregnancy yesterday. They are both approaching fifty, and their children, when they got over the shock that mom and dad are still doing that, are delighted for them. As are we and they.
Make it Man, I saw your comment on yesterday’s WV about trying again to reach Kinzi - thanks. I hope she and her family are okay and that you’re able to get a message through.
Weekend plans: Hubbie will be working. The boys and I plan to stay home and watch the snow. Another 6-10 inches predicted for tomorrow. Portland got nearly 90 inches of snow from December-February, nearly double the normal amount.
Update on the S. family, whom some of you were praying for: Both the 15-y.o. and the 10-y.o. have gone home from the hospital, and it looks like neither one has neurological damage from that awful accident. However, their 13-y.o. friend, who had similar injuries to theirs, is still in the hospital and not making much progress.
My weekend plans include our traditional Friday night pizza and video (my two fellow missionaries and me). Saturday, hmmm, I’ll probably update my blog and maybe actually cook a real meal instead of just throwing together whatever is fastest. (Since there’s no take-out here, you have to create your own “fast food”.) Mostly I have to rest on the weekends due to chronic fatigue. When I don’t get a lot of rest on the weekend, the next week is a killer. Makes for boring weekends, but you do what you have to do.
Here is my favorite Bill Buckley quote:
“We need a rebirth of gratitude for those who have cared for us, living and, mostly, dead. The high moments of our way of life are their gifts to us. We must remember them in our thoughts and in our prayers; and in our deeds.” William F. Buckley Jr. (1925 - 2008).
Have not heard from Kinzi. Just hope she’s on furlough or something and not checking email…
EYG,
I’ve seen that movie. It was pretty good, although quite the tearjerker.
I’m thinking of something mindless like Transformers or Spiderman 3….
MMacMurray: It is almost 4 o’clock here in Jersey and it is sunny! They promised us snow by 3 p.m. I’m disappointed. 90 inches here would drive everyone crazy! Widespread panic!
We’ll keep praying for the S. Family and their friend.
Chas, if Goldwater saw how many people were kicked out of Long Branch, NJ via eminent domain to be replaced with million dollar condos virtually on the water, he’d go nuts. This was unAmerican. I’m not in favor of erosion, and I don’t really wish people ill will, but someday there’s gonna be a hurricane…..
Adios wins! Daniel Webster is correct. Please enjoy your digital triple espresso, black…

(speaking of which, I am, as yet, Starbuckless today. Yikes.)
Today was a beautiful day to be outside listening to the birds, so I was. The blackbirds are back complete with red wings and tricolors. The robins as mentioned. And the starlings. I don’t know who was doing it but amid the chortlings and whistlings, I very clearly heard a cat meow. And then a cat fight. High up in my locust trees. Then a rooster crowed (we have been chicken free for five years here, though we expect that to change soon). And coyotes starting yipping and howling. Finally, a horse whinnied. All from up in the trees. Those birds are amazing, whoever was doing it was good.
Weekend plans:
1. Sleep till I wake up tomorrow.
2. Watch college basketball.
3. Go see “U-2 in 3-D” at the Imax.
4. Watch more college basketball (TN plays KY at noon on Sunday).
5. Go to the bookstore, look for people who are reading books without buying them, and taser them.
In other words, a normal weekend.
MakeitMan,
Do you use water color paints in tubes, or do you prefer the cakes?
I have discovered today that I far prefer the cakes!
Thanks, NJL (22). It was supposed to start snowing here by about 10 p.m. but I haven’t seen anything yet.
How’s the job search?
