Meet Alisa Harris!

Gravatar  50 Comments

Hi Friends,

After a high-level meeting with myself, I thought it was high time I introduced you, the Regulars, to Alisa Harris, assistant editor at World on the Web, the webzine portion of this site. Alisa has been monitoring you characters on the WOW threads. She’ll be dropping in here on the blog threads from time to time, trying to get to know you. (I have convinced her that you are all reasonable, intelligent people with good breath.)

Here’s a brief bio on Alisa:

Like Sally in one of my favorite movies, nothing has happened to me yet, which is why I went to New York to become a reporter, so that I could write about things that happen to other people.

I came to New York from Hillsdale College, a little liberal arts college in Michigan where I foolishly majored in English.  I came to Michigan from New Mexico and on cold gray days, I miss the Southwest.

A few important details:

I am a horrible driver. I am secretly addicted to medical dramas. My ideal man is a blend of Hugh Grant and Jesus. I believe it’s a moral failing not to have a sense of humor.  I will write a book (or five or six) one day.

Take a moment to say hi  so that if I have to loan her my scepter for use on the WOW threads, you’ll already have a warm and tender relationship when she bonks you with it.

:-)

    Hi Alisa,

I am a reasonable, intelligent person with good breath. Except when I am not. Welcome.

    Welcome Alisa!

I’m sure my record precedes me and that you’ve been sufficiently warned about me ;-)

  3. Hi, Alisa. Welcome.

Majoring in English isn’t so bad. I’m a Communications/Writing major who has made a living at editing for 14 years and written four and a half books (two have been published; I’m working on publishing the rest and starting one more that a publisher approached me about).

I moved to Chicago for college from Phoenix, so I understand the missing-the-Southwest thing! If you’re at WORLD headquarters now, though, I think you’ll find the South a good “compromise,” as I have, between the hot and dry and the cold and gray. Or are you in New York, as the bio seems to indicate?

  4. Welcome Alisa!

I would have majored in English, except I didn’t. I’m too much of a procrastinator!

I wound up working on cars instead. So instead of becoming reasonable, I developed a terrible temper and a vocabulary to go with it. Stupid cars anyway…. :-(

But then I got a job as a… well, the technical guy in a cabinet shop that embraces technology. I do everything no one else wants or knows how to do. So yes, I’m intelligent, or a reasonable facsimile thereof. And yes the stress level is less. :-) But I’m no less unreasonable when I am under pressure.

You be the judge on the breath. One never knows unless someone tells them.

And don’t you dare hit me with that scepter! :-P

    Hi Alisa!

I majored in Spanish, which was lots of fun and very educational but not very useful for finding jobs except as a teacher, which I tried twice and decided I wasn’t cut out for handling teenagers more than one at a time. (Perhaps a good things our sons are 7 years apart.)

  6. Wow! You plan on writing 5 or 6 books in one day!

Welcome Alisa. I’m one of those occasional posters who is mostly ignored. :)

  7. Welcome Alisa! Glad you’re here.

I wanted to go to college and major in English…but I didn’t.

Don’t believe that the majority here have good breath - most of them are coffee drinkers - have you ever known a coffee drinker to have good breath? Eeeew. :-)

(Metanoia - Welcome to you too! I always read your posts and believe me when I tell you there are some posters who I do ignore and skim right over their posts - but not yours!)

I have a degree in English Literature and have used it to:

torment bank managers, “Excuse me, sir, but did you know you have a misspelled sign outside?”

judge my then-boyfriend (who married me anyway): “Er, I don’t suppose you realized you had 59 grammatical errors in your last love letter?”

serve as the lectern at an Episcopal church–the Word of God comes alive when you read it out loud

and (my favorite) read to my children over and over and over again.

And while I have written nine books, none have been published . . .yet! :-)

    Better success to you! :-)

  9. How’s it goin’, Alisa?

  10. Hello Alisa,
My husband wishes he had majored in English! He loooves literature, and understands it, deeply. At an early age, he impressed his teachers so much, that they thought he must have been cheating. So, he majored in Geology!
    :-)
He says that is his one regret in life.

Wish you had a little drawing/picture like Lynn and the others do…
    ;-)

  11. Alisa does have an avatar. It’s on all the articles she posts, as well as the Meet The Writers page.

Oh My! Poor Alisa. Lynn has thrown her to the dogs! That should be against the law and Alisa should at least get combat pay. Llamas wouln’t stand for it I can tell you that.

At least Hillsdale is a beautiful college if way liberal and out there a ways, Alisa realizes there can be no love without humor and that all jobs can be temporary :-)

Howdy do Alisa! Here’s some welcome llama spit for you - this could be considered a very high honor under certain circumstances but, in your case, I though I would get you in the swing of things and get you used to what flies around here most days instead :-)

It grows on ya if you survive.

  13. Will go look for it!

  14. Yes, she does. I stand corrected!

  15. Did I stumble into an AA meeting?

  16. 16. Gravatar by Chas 11.28.07 at 5:20 pm

HI Alisa. Lynn exagerated when she said we all were reasonable, intelligent and have good breath. She hasn’t spoken to my wife. But my wife’s never complained about my breath.
    Welcome aboard!
However, you’re not new, I’ve seen things from you before.

Uhhhh? This doesn’t mean Lynn is bugging out does it?

  17. 17. Gravatar by Lynn Vincent 11.28.07 at 5:26 pm

    Chas,

No, I’m not going anywhere. But Alisa will be managing the WOW threads, while I will be managing the blog threads.

    :-)

Thanks for the welcome! I’ve already gotten to know some of you in my thread-perusing. I promise to wield the scepter gently.

To Cheryl D, I am in New York City and loving it.

As far as my English major goes, I think if you love to read it’s best to do it on your own time, for the pure love of reading. If you do it for a grade, sometimes it kills the joy.

Llama, I’m surprised you’ve heard of Hillsdale!

  19. 19. Gravatar by paula 11.28.07 at 6:14 pm

    BT- LOL!

Metanoia- I’m another of those irregular posters who gets mostly ignored, until I wrote “Daylight Savings Time” with the unnecessary s. So if you want to get noticed, find someone’s grammatical pet peeve and go for it.

Oh, and Hi to you, Alisa, as well.

  20. I’m familiar with Hillsdale as an Imprimis subscriber, of which I first heard on the Michael Medved show.

“…a blend of Hugh Grant and Jesus”

Well, they both associated with prostitutes, but in very different ways. ;-)

    Ugh. Sorry. I couldn’t resist.
Let it not be said that among my moral failings is a lack of sense of humor.

    Hi, Alisa, and welcome.

I’ve appreciated the contributions I’ve already seen. Glad you’re enjoying New York–just don’t freeze to death!

I also get Imprimis TRR. Welcome Alisa!

  23. 23. Gravatar by One Last Breath 11.28.07 at 7:23 pm

It has been my experience as a younger sibling of Alisa that she wields her scepter gently. Unless you start to really annoy her, than she yells at you. : )

    heh heh
    Hi Alisa!
I don’t think I qualify as a “regular”, but welcome anyway.

“I have convinced her that you are all reasonable, intelligent people with good breath”

If this was court, this would be the part where I stand and say “I object, your honor!”

    #23
I think we need more yelling, personally.
All of this “civility” is killing me.

  25. Welcome Alisa. I don’t have much to say except that my rule is if someone offers you gum or a breath mint accept it with gratitude. They might be trying to tell you something.

  26. 26. Gravatar by Alisa Harris 11.28.07 at 7:51 pm

One Last Breath is my little brother. He’s the one you really don’t want to tangle with.

  27. 27. Gravatar by Alisa Harris 11.28.07 at 7:52 pm

TRR: I guess I’m thinking more Jesus than Hugh Grant. Maybe.

  28. Oh by the way, I have a History and English degree which apparently hasn’t done me much good.

  29. 29. Gravatar by Harris 11.28.07 at 8:12 pm

At least Hillsdale is a beautiful college if way liberal and out there a ways,

snork!!! (as juice comes spurting out my mouth and onto the keypad)

Ah, good ol’ liberal Hillsdale … and btw, English is something they do well there.

oh well, the good news about a Harris is that you never have to worry about the phrase, “are you related …” because you aren’t.

    with that, welcome.

  30. Really? My mother was a Harris… But all the court records burned up in a fire, so there’s really no way of telling…

  31. I missed Llama’s comment about Hillsdale being liberal.
Maybe, but you need a (way) different definition of liberal than is commonly used here.
Maybe he was thinking of Wellesley. ;-)

  32. Wow! Two acknowledgments. They like me . . . they really like me!

    Thanks VS and Paula.

Maybe Alisa will be my good luck charm. Wait a minute this is a Christian blog, we don’t believe in luck. See what you all have done, you’ve left me flabbergasted and I’m beside myself. :)

  33. Hello, Alisa Harris. Welcome.

    FP

  34. Welcome Alisa!

You live in New York and you are a bad driver? I thought all New Yorkers were! Just kidding. I was born in raised in Arizona by New York parents. The only New Yorkers I ever rode with (besides my parents) were cousins and a friend of my grandparents who were all dangerous, but yet never had accidents.

I now live in Missouri, teach high school Spanish, and miss the Southwestern warmth this time of year too.

Metatonia (3rd time is a charm): I have been accused of being ignored before. (And MiM said I was thoughtful. What does he know?)

Speaking of MiM- Can the scepter be used against him? He made it, so doesn’t he get some other discipline?

  35. 35. Gravatar by kBells 11.28.07 at 11:07 pm

Hi Alisa, I know you can’t tell from my posts, but I also was an English Major. However as my Bio implies I am as grammatical as my son, my cat and my time will allow. The degree never got me a job but it did get me a promotion once. The one book I wrote was recently turned down as “unpolished and too unique for our needs”. I took that as a nice way of saying “sloppy and weird”.

  36. 36. Gravatar by Alisa Harris 11.28.07 at 11:59 pm

Peter L: I don’t drive in New York and I think it’s one of the best things about living here. I’m in love with public transportation.

  37. 37. Gravatar by Alisa Harris 11.29.07 at 12:00 am

Oh, and Harris — friends who read WoW have asked if we’re related.

  38. Metanoia,
I’m sorry you feel ignored! Yours is one of my very favorite gravatars. Who doesn’t like Mighty Mouse? :-)

    Paula,
I didn’t know you felt that way, too.

I think we all feel that way sometimes. In my early days here, I used to get my feelings hurt at least twice a week.

To be honest, I think it’s a whole lot friendlier and civil since Lynn came aboard. She brought this up to a whole new level, and then did it again!

    Great Job, Lynn!

  39. Greetings, Alisa. Lynn is overly kind in her description of the regulars here, but we forgive her. 8)

Good question! It hardly seems right to whack MiM with his own scepter. Maybe I could fly to his hometown and lock him out of his own woodshop. That would be severe…

    RE #38: Thanks, EYG!

    And…

Hi Coyote! I’ve been wondering where you’ve been. Busy at work?

  43. Lynn 41: Maybe I could fly to his hometown and lock him out of his own woodshop.

Oh, that is extreme. Talk about cruel and unusual! I seem to think he would prefer the whacking.

  44. Maybe I could fly to his hometown and lock him out of his own woodshop.

Oh, talk about cruel and unusual! I seem to thiunk he would prefer getting the scepter whack.

  45. Well, now. I tried posting this earlier at work, but nothing happened. Let’s see about at home.

Lynn #41: Maybe I could fly to his hometown and lock him out of his own woodshop.

Wow, is that harsh! Talk about cruel and unusual! I would think MiM would prefer to be whacked than locked out of his shop!

  46. Well, now. I tried posting this three times, but nothing happened. Let’s see about now (changed one word).

Wow, is that harsh! Talk about cruel and unusual! I would think MiM would prefer to be swatted than locked out of his shop!
