Rants! & Raves!

Got good or bad Thanksgiving news to report? Here’s your opportunity, in our first semi-holiday edition of Rants! & Raves!, your weekly chance to sound off.

Remember the rules:

 1. A Rave! is something that happened during the past week that you’re pleased about and is signified by the word “Rave!” and/or an appropriately peppy emoticon.

2 A Rant! is something that happened during the past week that you’re ticked about and is signified by the word “Rant!” and/or an appropriately grumpy emoticon.

3. You may Rant! about something a person said, did or wrote, but you may not Rant! about generally disliking a person.

Have fun!

:-)

45 Comments to “Rants! & Raves!”

  1. Rave: My son and all the family is coming today for the big shindig tomorrow. Oldest GD & her husband too. They are bringing Caned. Caden is 18 mos. old and whe haven’t seen him since June. We are especially anxious to see the little rascal.

Mary is coming too! We thought she wouldn’t make it because she has a ticket to the Clemson game. That takes priority. However, it’s a night game and she gets back in time.

This may seem trivial, but it ain’t.

  2. 2. Gravatar by kBells 11.23.07 at 7:51 am

Rant: My husband had to be out of town from Wednesday to Sunday.
Rave: Being married to someone I miss so much when he’s not here.

  3. Rave:
The kids are home, the roof is on, and we had a wonderful meal on Thanksgiving.
    Rant:
The car got rear-ended and needs repair, the septic system is next on the list of needed repair, and I’m working today…

  4. Rave:
    We got some RAIN yesterday!

  5. Rant: my aunt in her eighties thinks she will make some money printing out calendars of classic art. (I was going to try and sell some to people at wmb.) Her computer and printer, ten years old, were completely inadequate for the task. I bought her a new computer and printer and had it delivered to her in New York City. As the rant escalates (the full horrifying details in my blog), she called my wife a couple of days ago to tell her the new computer had failed. Staples (her choice, not mine) is supposed to deliver her a new one. We will see if the chain turns out to be heroes or something other.

Rave: We are the only couple in America, perhaps, not to have a formal Thanksgiving celebration yesterday. We visited my daughter, her out-of-law partner and three year old granddaughter last weekend for an informal celebration. Yesterday, partner’s mom and stepfather visited from east coast. Grandchild called us last night; childish voice piped over the phone: “I called you to say ‘Happy Thanksgiving.’” [Parental voice in background: “Tell them you love them.”] Childish voice: “I love you grandma and grandpa.”

This Saturday we will go out to a restaurant on the island and celebrate 42 years of married life. Plenty to be thankful about, including still being alive and my wife still putting up with me.

Rant: 3 year-old with fever waking up every hour last night; husband hacking his cough everywhere for days; my own asthma making an unwelcome comeback

Rave: I can listen to Christmas music now! At least, once the kids are done watching the classic Pink Panther cartoon.

  7. Rave: A wonderful Thanksgiving celebration with most of my close relatives. (My brother and one of my nephews was missing.)

Rave: I got to see my father and my youngest sister after several years apart.

Rant: My mouth is still a little sore from oral surgery last week. I ate mostly the soft food (mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, etc.) but managed to eat some turkey very carefully.

  8. Rant: My hedges are still gone and two pitiful saplings are in their place. My husband doesn’t want me to fight the border war (uprooting saplings and replacing my hedges).

Rave: My youngest sister is visiting, daughter is home, and we are getting to know her boyfriend–who is a very nice guy.

  9. :-) A lovely, quiet, Thanksgiving dinner with just the two of us plus my husband’s older sister.

:-( Not getting to see any of the grandkids!

  10. 10. Gravatar by Anlir 11.23.07 at 12:05 pm

:-( Rant! one of the boxes of lights I purchased the other night is the wrong size of lights, so I have to go back to Target today.

:-) Rave! I’m getting a cut tree this year instead of an artificial one. I’m going for a Nova Scotia fir.

  11. Fir trees RULE! No more pines for me…

  12. 12. Gravatar by llama 11.23.07 at 2:18 pm

Rave: having just the best traditional Thanksgiving of all time with family and Doxie and a feast that cannot be matched by any other.

Rant: Those that didn’t get to say Thanks and enjoy Thanksgiving with family and friends.

  13. 13. Gravatar by Anlir 11.23.07 at 2:28 pm

:-( Rant! I just pulled out all of the Christmas boxes from storage this year. There are around 20 of them. There are far too many! Must thin the herd this year…

:-) Rave! I found my Christmas stocking from when I was a little boy. It’s cute - it has my given first name on it, which I haven’t used since I was a kid (I go by my middle name).

    New Year’s resolution #1:

Must learn how to use bold properly ;-)

  15. :-( Rant: A whole tier of lights don’t work on the tall, thin pre-lit tree we bought last year. Can’t find the problem.

    :-) Rave:
    Left over turkey for sandwiches!

  16. 16. Gravatar by Anlir 11.23.07 at 3:01 pm

    EYG,

That’s why I won’t buy a pre-lit tree. It’s a hassle to fix when the lights go bad. Good luck! :-)

  17. You’re right, Anlir.
I was naive to think they were above such nonsense!

:-) Grandson’s home from university for the long weekend & spent 2 whole days with the family before going off with his pals.

:-( He downloaded 3 ringtones for my new cell phone, but the part about attaching a ringtone to a particular contact won’t work. They play when we select ‘play,’ but no matter who calls, it plays the tone we set as the default instead of the one it should play for that person.

:-) The default tone is Lionel Richie’s “Hello,” which is a pleasant tone to hear.

Rave! Leftover Thanksgiving dinner is even better than the original!

Rave! Senators Reid and Webb are keeping the Seante in session so President Bush can’t do any of his tricky recess appointments!

Rave! It is another beautiful sunny fall day!

Rave! I have nothing worth complaining about!

  20. 20. Gravatar by mmacmurray 11.23.07 at 5:39 pm

:-) A really nice Thanksgiving day with family and extended family

:-) A gorgeous fall day today, clear and sunny, though chilly

:-) A beautiful white moon is rising right where I can see it from the kitchen windows

:-) My dad is recovering well from gall bladder surgery earlier this week

:-) Both the Southwestern corn casserole and sausage-herb-apple-cranberry stuffing I made for Thanksgiving dinner were hits!

:-( Just got back from Kohl’s, where I wanted to buy a couple of sweaters. Because of Black Friday, I couldn’t get witin a country mile of a cash register, even if I wanted pay full price!

  22. 22. Gravatar by Anlir 11.23.07 at 6:14 pm

Corn and cranberry are two of my faves! If one likes cranberries, there is a Cranberry festival every fall in Wisconsin that’s worth going to. You can find cranberry “everything” there, from salsa to icecream. The cranberry cream puffs are to die for.

For guys anyway, Kohl’s is a great place to shop for clothes. But I wouldn’t go near them today. The nice thing about Kohl’s is that they’re always having a sale of one sort or another.

RANT! My wife just got home from the store with stuff to turn the breakfast room into a winter wonderland. Uggh! It’s November! Winter isn’t for another month!

  24. 24. Gravatar by Anlir 11.23.07 at 7:43 pm

    H-2,

One must decorate tastefully, taking into account the little ones of course. One must not overdo it, lest it become “tacky, tacky, tacky!” as Ms. Manners would say. Good luck with that ;-)

Semi-rant - Got a call from SIL, Thanksgiving morning, to expect 2 more for dinner (though only 1 of the 2 made it), that my niece, Katie, had invited to my house without asking.

Her friend, Kyle, who is gay, was not welcome at his parents house this Thanksgiving, so he & his new boyfriend were invited to join us.

I say “semi-rant” because I wasn’t really angry, just a bit nervous about fitting everybody in.

Rave - Had a great time, with our “usual” family, & Kyle, along with Katie’s boyfriend & my daughter, Emily’s, boyfriend/fiance.

Also some funny moments - 2 glasses broke within a couple minutes when first my SIL, then my brother, tried to fill their glasses with ice from the icemaker.

And the green bean casserole caught fire in the toaster oven. The flames were pretty high when it was taken out! But all was well. We all had some good laughs.

  26. 26. Gravatar by Anlir 11.23.07 at 8:05 pm

    Karen O,

That’s why every family should have a velvet rope at the front door and a “bouncer” to keep out uninvited guests and cranky relatives for Thanksgiving and Christmas ;-)

  27. Rant (to get it over with), being a guest each year, I never get nearly enough turkey. I brought home olives and pickles. Yum. I want turkey.

Rave #1: This year the leaves stayed on the trees till Thanksgiving, so I finally got a beautiful autumn drive. Some spots were as lovely as the photos of New England hills; overall a lovely drive.

Rave #2: The 11 people and four dogs all got along without any fights. Well, the dogs were all leashed, and one snarled and tried to get at other dogs when she got half a chance, but she never succeeded. And my dog succeeded in giving her a really wonderful snub that made everyone laugh (very pointedly turning her back to her and staring at the piano).

Rave #3: Getting able to see my eight-month-old grandniece sit at the piano and “play,” a delight to her and to all of us.

    Rave #4: Being safely home.

  28. :-) Thanksgiving! “Oh, give thanks unto the Lord for he is good; and his mercies endure forever” Psalm 137.

:-( The day after. Why does every radio station have to play nothing but Christmas music starting the day after Thanksgiving? And why do Christian stations join in? Should not Christian stations play the best “Christmas” music all year? And why do CHristian stations also play the tacky, secular tunes as well? Aaargh! Looking forward to January!

  29. 29. Gravatar by HamachiTwo 11.23.07 at 9:45 pm

Anlir, it isn’t as bad as I imagined. She lined the ceiling perimeter in white lights, and there are sparkling white snowflakes hanging at different heights from the ceiling, none low enough to hit my head. She was laughing really hard at one point and I went to see what was happening. She warned me not to come in. She had the tv on and the news people were showing the tree lighting ceremony at the big store downtown, as well as others. Christmas music was playing… She didn’t want my head to pop a month early.

Yes, the kids will love it when they see it.

“Her friend, Kyle, who is gay, was not welcome at his parents house this Thanksgiving, so he & his new boyfriend were invited to join us.”

This is sad. What lousy parents “Kyle” has. It was nice of you to squeeze them in on short notice.

  31. 31. Gravatar by kBells 11.23.07 at 11:42 pm

Rave: Hubbie coming home a day earlier.
Rant: Ditto on rant in post #28. I hate that snow music.

  32. :-( Rant: People who put their trees up on Thanksgiving. Ours usually goes up just before Christmas and comes down just before Easter (if we’re lucky). My wife is a bit on the late side.

:-) Rave: Online shopping. I don’t have to find parking spaces any more.

  33. Hamichitwo - I think the room sounds beautiful!

It’s given me an idea! :-)

  34. 34. Gravatar by Karen O 11.24.07 at 10:49 am

Hamachitwo - It blessed us to be able to include Kyle in our celebration. I may not approve of his lifestyle, but he is a very nice, intelligent, & funny young man, & we enjoyed his company very much.

Your description of your wife’s decorating reminds me of what my mom used to do. It was like a winter wonderland for her granddaughters.

  35. 35. Gravatar by HamachiTwo 11.24.07 at 2:45 pm

Karen, I think she did it to remind me to start thinking of something nice to give her. I have a little over a month :)

  36. Xion #32- My rant-like post would be wondering why Christians feel the need for a tree in the first place. But then, I also do not think Jesus was born in December, as the shepherds would have frozen their behinds off watching their flocks by night. His birthday was more likely in the fall or late summer. But that is a discussion for another time and another thread, so please do not hijack this one with replies. Perhaps I’ll post something later on my own blog or a WV thread.

BTW- I do not think it a sin to celebrate Christmas with a tree and the trimmings, just a waste of time and money to do so.

  37. I’m with you Peter L. Can we just come over to your house for baked ham instead?

  38. So what does ham have to do with Christmas? :-)

  39. 39. Gravatar by HamachiTwo 11.25.07 at 12:30 am

Peter, it all goes back to the roots of what we now call Christmas. It’s a Pagan Holiday celebrating the Birth of the Sun or Sun God. (Christians say “Birth of the Son” or “Son of God”) In the Northern Hemisphere, after three days where The Sun appears not to move any further South on the Western horizon, it is “reborn” or “risen again” on the 25th to begin bringing longer days and “The Light” that gives life. Read up on Horus and other Virgin birth Gods who die for 3 days before being resurrected and had birthdays celebrated on Dec. 25th. They even had stars in the East, and three Kings…. great story really.

Growing up we always ate ham on Easter and Christmas. I assume, because it was easy for my mom to do and allowed her to relax a bit after doing the Santa and Easter Bunny stuff the night before?

  40. 40. Gravatar by Karen O 11.25.07 at 11:06 am

VS asks, “So what does ham have to do with Christmas?”

Well, Jesus came to fulfill the law, so Jews didn’t have to be kosher anymore, & ham was now allowed.

(Can you tell I just made that up?)

  41. 41. Gravatar by Chas 11.25.07 at 2:49 pm

VS: What does ham have to do with Christmas?
Because it makes great sandwiches later in the day when you discover, as opposed to about four hours age when you thought you would never eat again, thay you are hungry and tired of turkey.

BTW We had a nice reunion for my wife’s family yesterday. I finally learned what I suspected for about 52 years. I learned from a 4-year old who announced that. “Uncle Charlie is a pain in the butt.” That’s because I’m the only one in the entire group who doesn’t eat onions. They make special dressing (stuffing) and potato salad for Charlie. Been doing that forever. Elvera says they have me spoiled. But I’m not spoiled at all. I am, however, kinda head of the family since of nine siblings, all the men have died, including the husbands of the women except for Elvera and her younger sister.

  42. Peter L and Xion were discussing what Christmas trees etc have to do with Christmas and their decision was “nothing” and so when Xion asked Peter about joining him for a ham dinner, I decided to ask what ham has to do with Christmas.

I have no objection to ham on Christmas dinner and is what I prepare as well. :-)

Chas - Aren’t you “suspicious” as to where the 4 year old might have heard such a comment? :-)

  43. 43. Gravatar by HamachiTwo 11.25.07 at 7:47 pm

VS swings and it’s a grand slam! :-)

Reminds me of when my 3yo sister told my aunt that she has the dirtiest house my mom had ever seen.

  44. 44. Gravatar by Chas 11.25.07 at 9:04 pm

    VS
I know. It was his grandmother (Elvera’s sister) Thanksgiving day when she was making a special potato for me. She stuck a toothpick in it to identify it. Everybody had a laugh.
I’m not really a picky eater. I just don’t eat onions, raw or cooked, and they are such an important part of many dishes, it seems that I am.

  45. Xion #37- Well, if you come to my house for ham on Christmas day, you would do well to have your own ham and the key to get in. Or you could share the ham with the dog, she would love the company (and the ham). We’ll be with my in-laws in Iowa.
