Praising Pelosi (!)
Who’da thunk it? In this space, I am going to praise Rep. Nancy Pelosi
Remember Andrew Larochelle, the Ohio Eagle Scout who wanted to give his grandfather a Capitol flag, but was disappointed when the Capitol architect excised the word “God” from the accompanying certificate? With a little nudge from Pelosi, the Architect has fixed the weird, censorious glitch, the Associated Press reports:
The acting Architect of the Capitol, Stephen Ayers, said Thursday he was revising guidelines on Capitol flag certificates because it was “beyond the scope of this agency’s responsibilities to censor messages from members of Congress.”
Last week Rep. Michael Turner, R-Ohio, protested upon learning that the Architect’s office had removed the word “God” from the certificate of authenticity accompanying a flag 17-year-old Andrew Larochelle of Dayton wanted to give his grandfather. The boy had asked that the certificate read: “This flag was flown in honor of Marcel Larochelle, my grandfather, for his dedication and love of God, country and family.” But the Architect excised “God” from the inscription, saying it violated a policy, set in 2003, banning religious and political expressions on the certificates….The flag dispute led off questioning at Pelosi’s weekly news conference Thursday. “I don’t think the Architect’s office should be in the role of censoring what members want to say,” she said.
Good for Nancy. Good for Andrew. Good for America.

Nobody is bad 100% or wrong all the time. Good for Ms Pelosi!
And now I have to eat it by giving Lynn at least half a point for fairness and accuracy. I think she did this on purpose. Or this is Nancy paying me back for voting for Chrissy Keefer!
Luke, LOL
Good for her. That is awesome.
To me “praise” is just a tad strong for what amounts to her reaction to her wet fingers catching wind.
As I’ve followed the story this was not her first choice of resolution and if a tempest of even yet more bad press for congress hadn’t developed, it wouldn’t have ended as it did. It seems she had disapproval numbers flashing in her eyes as she caved.
A preliminary “rush” transcript from Hannity & Colmes:
“COLMES [to Representative Michael Turner of Ohio]: As I understand — and Nancy Pelosi pointed out that the Congress people like yourself, at your discretion, can on behalf of your constituents, inscribe whatever you want on these certificates. You could have always helped out here and interjected and gotten Andrew what he wanted. Right?
“TURNER: Well, you had — you had said that yesterday and that actually was not true. The inscriptions are done by the architect himself.
“Nancy Pelosi was offering a solution which would have been take off all inscriptions, and then people could put something of their own on there. Basically translated to if we’re going to make the architects say “God”, let’s have him say nothing.
“But the new solution, which is the right, which is the one that — that supports what we need to do to get Andrew his certificate, is that the architect will still issue the certificates. They will include inscriptions requested by constituents, and he will permit, if constituents request it, the acknowledgement of God.”
Yes, Nancy came around, but the sleeve on her blouse needs to be re-ironed.
I’ll take this as a bit of a hopeful sign from her. Maybe some of that praying she says she was doing recently has had a little two-way effect?
I don’t think it’s in Scripture, but we should give praise where praise is due.
Good for Nancy and the kid!
the word God was inscribed on a piece of paper meanwhile people continue to die in a needless war. Glad to see America has its priorities in order
I don’t think it’s in Scripture, but we should give praise where praise is due.

HRW, I don’t know about Canadians, but we Americans are able to do more than one thing at a time.
You really don’t object to a teenage boy getting to put the word God in a tribute to his grandfather, do you?
no, I really think the gov’t has better things to do with its time than assisting in tributes to family members whether it has the word god or not in it. Canadians can do more than one thing at a time but we don’t fight needless wars very well and we avoid talking about religion and our government spends its time on health and education rather than on permissible vocabulary. Given our productivity rate, you may be right and Canadians are better off doing one thing at a time.
Thank you DR.
