This quote is from Alfred Adler.
I would have said Dr. Phil or Dr. Laura, but I googled it and learned I would have been wrong.
I think it’s a quote about lip service. It is easier to do everything around the difficult thing you have to do, than to (honestly) buckle down and deny your flesh and do the thing.
But like anything, it’s more daunting before you actually do it. There is something about ‘just doing it’ that eliminates the intimidation factor.
disclaimer: I woke up about 15 minutes ago and am philosophizing without the aid of coffee.

Alfred Adler is correct. I remember from studying the history of psychology and psychiatry thinking that he was among the wisest of doctors. One of the things I seem to remember he did was advocate friendship as a healing force. I’m going to go look him up on wiki.
Yeah! Check him out on Wikipedia. He had other great ideas on community and belonging-ness (if that’s a word).
Lynn,
Could you please put a title on this thread? The title is what links to it if you use either the list of most active threads or the list on the left side of the screen. (I finally got into it by coming to the WorldMagBlog tab, which I haven’t used in months.)
Pauline beat me to it!!
Does anyone read Chinese? Can you confirm this quote from Mark Buchanan’s The Rest of God:
“The Chinese join two characters to form a single pictograph for busyness: heart and killing.”
By the way, I read Lynn’s Some Kind of Different as Me over the weekend and Chas was right–this is a really good book! Well written, a great story and perfect for a Sunday afternoon in the sun.
Janie - I don’t know if “belonging-ness” is a real word, but it sure gets the point across.
I believe that mankind’s greatest need is to belong. Many people will say that love is our greatest need, but I think a sense of belonging trumps even love. And when one belongs to a group, love is usually a part of that.
That’s why, I think, people yearn for families, & why some youths are drawn to gangs. The terminology in the Bible reflects this by calling us friends & brothers (& sisters) of Christ, referring to God as our Father, etc.
Does anyone know of a good book on astronomy (space, planets, stars, etc.) that would be good for a 16-yr. old girl?
EYG - Has your family in Colombia mentioned anything about the Venezuelan troops moving to the Colombian borders? Are they worried?
I’m praying for a peaceful resolution.
Thanks, Lynn!
Karen O,
I agree. I would probably say that our desire to belong is a desire for love, the kind of love that says you matter to us just because you’re part of us. There are a few people who seem to be content to be on their own - really content, not just running away from involvement because of the responsibility or vulnerability that go with it. But those people are rare, and not - in my opinion - something to aspire to. People seem to be made to belong, which as a Christian I see as one aspect of being made in the image of God (as the Trinity reflects that relationship is intrinsic to God’s being).
A new face in the winner’s circle: TonyBoyd! Alfred Adler said it. Please enjoy your digital cappucino…

Not sure what you mean…the title “Whirled Views 3.3″ does appear in the “WMB Recent” column on the lower left side of the homepage…? Please advise…
Karen O - I sell Usborne Books and we have several good astronomy books for olders kids. E-mail me if you are interested in specifics or if I can help you find one.
I couldn’t find Whirled Views for a long time this morning either.
I want to thank everyone who prayed for my Uncle Tim last Thursday or Friday. He was feeling bad after his first week of chemo and radiation. He started feeling better on Friday and was able to spend the weekend doing sightseeing with some family. He reported he was relatively pain-free on Saturday and that he is healing well from the surgery. He starts more chemo and radiation today, but definately had a good weekend and I know he appreciates the prayer.
Lynn,
It does appear now, but it didn’t when I wrote #5. There was just a blank space above the number of comments and the date. Same thing in the most recent list - just a “bullet” with a blank next to it. And on the WorldMagBlog page, where I could see it, the title was showing as “”.
If you didn’t do anything to fix it, then either someone else did, or it fixed itself. But I wasn’t the only one to notice the problem, since Cameron and KI commented on it also.
In case it helps, I use IE version 6.
I don’t know if this is related, but I have frequently noticed that part or all of the text of a post does not appear on my screen. I have to highlight the entire area, then I can see the text as white on blue. This morning is the first time that has happened with the frist several titles of posts in the most recent list. As usual, I was able to highlight the area and see them - except for the untitled WV thread, which showed nothing even when I highlighted the space where the title should have been.
WORLD MAG BLOG WEBSITE ISSUES
There’s definitely something going on with the website…. There are several issues:
1) I noticed the title to Whirled Views was missing this morning on the left hand side bar this morning also. By the time I read Paulines notice to that effect, the title had become visible.
2) That’s not the only glitchy thing going on with the website… As Pauline says, many times - no, scratch that - every DAY the text in the left hand list of topics is truncated until I roll the mouse over the list. That’s been going on for a WHILE.
3) In the past couple of weeks, I’ve also noticed that the photos posted with Andree Seu’s columns have been truncated as well. I can download the photos and then view them, but for some reason they will be truncated if viewed on the website, and no amount of refreshing, or mouse rollover will fix it.
4) You will post to a thread, and suddenly be logged out the next time you try to post something. That’s just annoying as all get out… If y’all would fix this problem I’d really appreciate it.
5) As long as we’re talking about website issue, can you make the left hand sidebar contains all the blog topics in chronological order? Many times I post in a topic that remains in the top left hand side bar for a short time, and then disappears altogether….
Hi friends. Just wanted to let you know (those who remember my baby announcement a few weeks ago), that God saw fit to bring our “number 5″ home with Him. I’ve been down this road (miscarriage) before, although not this early on. I was almost 5 months along with the baby I lost years ago. Those of you who don’t mind, please pray that the miscarriage will continue on its own to avoid any doctors visits, as I do not have any insurance. Praise the Lord for my four beautiful children God has already blessed us with.
MomofFour,
I’m so sorry for your loss, and will pray for you.
Let’s see if I can post a picture of the forum glitches. Nope. No can do.
Well I can certainly post a link to pictures of the forum glitches:

Momoffour, I’m so sorry. I’ve been there. I helped me to give him a name.
And I will pray as well, Momoffour. I’m so sorry.
***
Kbells, my wife and I did what you suggest, and my other three children continue to refer to their brother by name, with their young eyes on the resurrection.
Momoffour, Sorry for your loss.
MIM-go for it. So is it that the main bloggers don’t see the same things that we see? They might not experience the random log offs that we do (don’t get me started on that!), but you would think they would see the half letters/titles like we do.
Karen O. and Janie- Longing to belong- I agree. In fact, I made some similar comments yesterday on the depression thread.
Thanks, Pauline and MIM. I also noticed the blank fields you’re describing, but thought it was just my display. I’ll gripe it, as well as MIM’s list, to the techs.
So sorry for your loss, momoffour. Having been down that road at least twice, I know the sadness and wondering what went wrong. We must trust the the Lord knows best in situations like this.
MiM: Occasionally, I see the text truncated at home (IE 7) and just scroll back and forth until it reappears. I don’t notice it at work (Firefox).
I’m also sorry for your loss, momoffour, and am praying for you.
Momoffour - I’m so sorry for your loss, I know you will see that child again in heaven. I, too, am praying for you.
Don’t have any of those problems - Firefox rules! (plus, it remembers your password AND includes spell-check)
I’m with you, Mommy, I use Firefox 2.0.0.12, and have never had any of the promises others have mentioned.
I’ve been playing with my new computer, and have a suggestion for anyone who saves pictures on their computer. Save them on a flash drive! It’s taken hours to move 6 years worth of pictures. I had them in several different files so that only some of them would be used in my screen saver and others would be filed in various groups. I knew that I had duplicates, but kept forgetting which ones, so I had to keep checking back and forth. What a pain. They’re all on the flash drive now, and I’ll add any new ones there, too.
The best part of the new computer is the speed - I no longer have to click on something and take a walk while waiting for it to show up [there were times when I’d forget why I was going to that site by the time it appeared
]
Usborne Books - Oh my - I love them!
By the way I couldn’t find the WV thread for quite awhile this morning either!
And as MiM states: “every DAY the text in the left hand list of topics is truncated until I roll the mouse over the list.”
And……I also get logged out on a regular basis as MiM describes.
Mom of 4 - I am so sorry for your loss and will keep you in prayer!
Momoffour - So very sorry for your loss. May God comfort you & your husband.
VS & TL - Can you tell me a little about Usborne Books?
Kayvee,
It’s much easier just to network the two computers and transfer the files that way… I’m sure your new one has a network card, and the old one may also. It’s not very expensive to get one if not. And it’s definitely a LOT faster and less aggravating.
Karen - Usborne is a publisher of high-quality, educational books for children of all ages - and adults, too! I sell them online at my website, through home shows, e-shows, book fairs, etc. They are highly regarded in home schooling circles, because they are well-researched, beautifully illustrated, and many contain internet links to safe sites! My kids love them, and we use them for reference often - like when my son asked “what does a ray look like”? As in, Stingray - his group name in swimming lessons! Anyway, if you are interested, my website is http://www.ubah.com/g2687. I’d be happy to recommend some titles for you via email.
RE: Tech issues
Thank you all for pointing out the various problems you’ve been experiencing with the site. They’re being looked into as I write. Some if not all seem to be browser-related. I, too, am a Firefox user and would personally recommend it to you.
Make It Man, regarding your problem No. 5, we are working on revising the “Recent/Most Active” box and hope to make it more useful for you guys before too long. Meanwhile, all of the most recent WMB posts, usually going back two or three days, can be found in the “WMB Most Recent” box a little further down the left-hand column. We’ll soon have a separate “Most Recent” for WoW posts, as well.
MIN - Well of course it’s easier, that’s why I never thought of it!
There’s another benefit to having the pics on a flash drive, though. It fits in my purse and is readily available to plug into someone else’s computer to show off the grandkids.
Whoops! Even with preview, I missed seeing that I typed MIN instead of MIM
Mom of Four:
I’m very sorry. Being single, I have not experienced that, but have grieved with people very dear to me who have (some of them multiple times).
MomofFour, I’m so sorry for your loss. May the God of all comfort bring his peace to you and your husband. Praying for you.
Hi TL -
I’ve tried your website several times and am getting an error as noted below:
HTTP Error 404

Kayvee: What is a flash drive? I have a lot of pictures on my computer and have been wondering what I should do with them. We only have one computer.
MomofFour,
I’m sorry for your loss and am praying for you and your family.
Make It Man,
There’s a difference between the blog and the online magazine. The super-upper-left-hand box is a blend of topics, while the feed along the left hand side is strictly blog topics. For example, something about Green Dust was in the top box earlier, but isn’t now. It’s located under one of the other tabs at the top. Not convenient, but an explanation for why they don’t make it into the feed.
VS - thanks for the info! I will be checking on that ASAP. Try this link - my website is active, so I’m not sure what’s going on. In fact, I had an order come through this morning. Grr..

A flash drive is a small (lipstick sized) hard drive that you can put on your keychain! It stores any type of data and is totally portable -so you can take it to the store to print photos, for example. I don’t have one, but it sounds like I should! They plug into the tower of your computer.
I’ve seen them. I wasn’t sure if they would be good for photos. I believe my daughter uses one for a class she takes.
My photos are in a Kodak Program. Would the whole thing transfer?
MomofFour, God has his reasons. Am praying that all works out for you and your family.
They fit in the USB port of your computer and sell for about $20 for 1 GB, more than enough space for most people, at Target or just about anywhere. The 500 MB one I’ve been using for 3 years isn’t even a third full [it has personal docs, saved articles and all those pictures]. My daughter has one that’s about thumb sized that holds a lot but I don’t know how much.
KI - I’m not familiar with the Kodak program, so I don’t want to give you bad info. But if the pics are in a separate file from the application, you should be able to at copy, if not transfer, them.
Thabks. Kayvee. I had been wondering about those before.
Thanks Mickey.
I use Firefox at home, but at work I use IE because my tech support website doesn’t support Firefox… and I live on that forum.
Momoffour - My thoughts and prayers are with you. So sorry for your loss.
TL - Thanks for the info. I’ll be checking your site tomorrow.
My sympathies as well, momoffour. It helped, just a smidgen, to know over a quarter of all pregnancies end in miscarriage . . . but just a smidgen. Cry your eyes out and grieve it fully. That’s about the only thing I did right when it happened to me.
Blessings to your whole family.
Mom of Four,

I’m so terribly sorry.
I prayed according to your request and ask God’s comforting hand on you.
Karen O,
Thank you for asking!
Chavez is crazy and dangerous. He continues to move toward war. I spoke to my parents and they confirmed that this is indeed a problem.
He hates democracy. Colombia is the only US ally in South America. I hope it doesn’t become a full scale war. I don’t want that for Colombia.
Thank you for praying. We are praying, too. Please also pray for my parent’s and the country’s safety.
Thank you for remembering me.
Momoffour, I’m praying for you.
My mum had a miscarriage 3 years ago, and it was the saddest thing. She came home crying, and told us it was ok because she already had seven good kids.

Momoffour,
I am praying for you. I’m very sorry.
