Bolts shock Colts; head for New England  :)

  1. Congrats Lynn. Too bad they have to face the Pats next. But then again, they found the formula to beat the Colts!

That was a big time win. And since it is the Patriots who will be their opponent next week, I will now join the Chargers coalition!

This was a big one…..and now for the next one, hope they win!

    Lynn, how are you celebrating?

I’m holding you, Lynn Vincent, personally responsible for this debacle.

This is a faith-shaker. If the Chargers, led by Billy Volek (who?), can beat the Colts in Indianapolis in the post season, how many of the other things we believe to be true… aren’t?

I am really hoping they upset the Pats. I was hoping Jax would and it looked like they might early on last night.

I have nothing against the Pats in general, but they really do need to be taken down a peg. They’ve let their success go to their heads.

Unfortunately, if the Chargers can’t knock them out, they’ll probably sweep the season.

    Lynn, how are you celebrating?

By calculating how much it will set us back to go to the Super Bowl.

    :-)

Lynn, hope you get to go. The price of those tickets ….. LOL, its a hunk of change :) but lots of fun!

Stubob, get a grip doctor, take two aspirins, and call me in the morning.

Well, the Chargers are my kind of tough fighters. They’re cocky, unimpressed with their supposed betters, and willing to bleed for a win. As a Pats fan, I hope that the Chargers have been sufficiently beat up enough physically against the Steelers and Colts to face the Pats in a bruised condition.

At any rate Belichick needs to come up with a solid game plan that gets executed well in order to beat this tough team. They will, also, need to be very physical, as they were with both the Giants and Jaguars.

One thing for sure is that Belichick, Brady, et al will prepare well for this game and not rest on their ephemeral 17-O record. They are well aware that it would be supremely difficult for their fan, Peter, to face an exuberant Lynn should the Chargers win. :-)

BTW, the current forecast for next Sunday in the Boston area is a high of 16 and a low of 14. Those players from that wimpy Mediterranean clime of San Diego better bring along some insulated jockstraps.

  11. 11. Gravatar by Victoria 01.13.08 at 6:57 pm

Peter, we’re tough out west, we ride the waves in the winter, we sail in all kinds of weather, run, skiing an hour and half away, ….what was that you said about a high of 16? We’ll look for you in your snow suit, all zipped up with your hands tucked around your hot thermos……LOL

  12. 12. Gravatar by adios 01.13.08 at 7:11 pm

For some reason that I can’t explain, Peter, the Bolts have a pretty good record in nasty weather? Must be those jockstraps.

Despite my reddened eyes and soured disposition, I will absolutely be cheering for the Chargers next week. Anticipating a Colts victory, Belichick probably hasn’t bothered to steal San Diego’s playbook. He’ll have to hustle this week.

It’d be great to see the Chargers and the Packers in the Super Bowl.

  14. Whoa! Stop the train! Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Chargers won’t beat the Pats next week. Just enjoy this for the few days left, and then prepare for the worst.
    Sorry Lynn.
Reality has to happen sooner than later.

  15. When you lose Phil Rivers, it’s a possible upgrade to Billy Volek, sadly.

Lose LT, and your whole offense becomes suspect. You’d better hope that LT is healthy again on Sunday. If he is, and Norv Turner doesn’t choke with the game plan, the Bolts could well beat the Pats. It’s the playoffs: anything can happen.

  16. Lynn, blogging on Sunday, and a sports thread to boot! (Just teasing.)

I am glad Payton Manning is not going on this season. He seems to be everywhere on TV! However, I do not think SD will get past NE. Besides, if an AFC West team is to win the Super Bowl, it has to be the Chiefs! (Which probably means waiting several years.)

Go Packers! (They are the only team left I have ever liked.)

Peter L………”Lynn, blogging on Sunday, and a sports thread to boot! (Just teasing.)”

BAD, bad Peter……LOL, and who are you? …. and look who’s busy posting? :)

  18. Victoria-

If I were a strict Sabbatarian (which I am not) I would be fine posting now, since the sun went down more than 2 hours ago!

  19. The Chargers against the Pats: Sorry Lynn I have to go with the Pats. They’re a machine.

Giants against the Pack. Go Favre!

Patriots and Packers in the Super Bowl. The best quarterback ever and the young wannabe best quarterback ever. Could be a great matchup.

    Go Chargers.

Say, how did they ever get that name anyhow?

JM: Back in 1959, someone from Hollywood won an expenses-paid trip to Mexico City and Acapulco for submitting “Chargers” in a name-the-team contest. In 1960, the Chargers represented LA in the first year of the AFL. They moved to San Diego in 1961, and the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970.

Well my dreams of an all-manning superbowl have been dashed, but at least Eli and Big Blue are still in it.

And let me be the first to say, in my best Jimmy Johnson imitation, “How ’bout them Cowboys!”

And what I’ve enjoyed the most about Fox’s coverage has been how wrong they’ve picked the Giants playoff games. 0-8. And these are “experts”? Terry Bradshaw looked shocked, and Jimmy Johnson, for the 1st time ever, had nothing to say. And can we get maybe an unbiased play by play man? Joe Buck is fine, but Troy Aikman? C’mon. I thought he was gonna actually cry a couple times. Homer. Keep underestimating NY folks, we like it that way.

Eli’s coming along nicely as well. Pretty much kills off all that nonsense talk not winning big games. I’d like to see him get another shot at the Pats.

  23. After watching the highlights of the game this morning, I’m completely unimpressed with Philip Rivers (I watched part of a Monday night game on Christmas Eve with the Chargers and Broncos as well). He is cocky and arrogant (at least on the field), getting into jawing matches with opposing fans and teams. No class, imho.

Also, JM, “Chargers” originally referred to charging horses, and the team symbol was the head of a stallion. Sometime later (not sure when), the motif switched from horses to “Electricity!” and the logo went from horse to lightning bolt.

I don’t mind Phillip jawing with opposing teams, but I wish he wouldn’t mix it up with fans. I’ll tell you, though, a lot of menfolk around San Diego don’t mind that a bit. They like Phillip’s fire.

TJ, in all fairness then you should be just as unimpressed with Colts fans.

T.J. Simers has an hysterical article in the LA Times today about how the Bolts messed up the perfect game of the season–Indie and the Pats. He suggests the chargers should have gotten a clue that the football gods had it in for them when all their pro bowlers were sent and they still pulled out a victory against the Colts.

Not once, but twice I might add!

If there are no miracles against New England–is Rivers cockier than Brady?–next week, then the superbowl could be the old vet QB against the young buck. That would be fun to watch.

John Hadl was a good quarterback.

  28. 28. Gravatar by Peter Leavitt 01.14.08 at 3:30 pm

Tom Brady, has enough class to not “jaw” with opposing fans or players. Belichick frowns on any sort of trash talking on or off the field, as it can cause opposing teams to get fired up. The best way to “jaw” is with solid football results.

One of the reasons that both Belichick and Brady have achieved well is that they are acutely aware of the complex reality and difficulty of serious football, along with their own limitations, which they are always persistent in trying to overcome.

  29. Tom Brady, has enough class to not “jaw” with opposing fans or players.

Peter, I would say that most quarterbacks in the league also have that class. And most athletes, not just quarterbacks, are smart enough and classy enough not to get into shouting matches with the opposing team’s fans. It boggles my mind that not only did he go after Jake Cutler with words that should not come out of a human beings mouth (and it apparently spread to others on his team — “class” is catchy, I suppose, when you’ve got that kind of a leader), but he has no problem doing the same to the fans. At least LT has a quiet dignity about him.

But, I suppose, Rivers will have his defenders. It’s all great as long as the home team is winning — then anything goes. The folks in Atlanta used to think the same way.

    Travis,

John Hadl . . . that brings back memories. Lance Alworth was a great reciever!

  31. 31. Gravatar by Travis Birkenstock 01.14.08 at 6:32 pm

    Hi adios,

Indeed he was! Alworth was the first AFL player elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

This weekends Pats-Chargers AFC championship game is actually a rematch of the 1963 AFL Championship. The Chargers won that one beating the Boston Patriots 51-10.

I think I still have some Hadl and Alworth football cards somewhere.

Pardon me, but I wish to retract some of my boldness. Only Boston should be bold.
