Meditation 12.8

Gravatar  15 Comments

On Saturdays we consider a passage of Scripture. This is not a thread for theological debate but a time to consider the truth in an ancient text. Here’s today’s passage:

Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know, this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

Acts 2:22-24

I really, really hope I would have the courage to make such a bold pronouncement if I were in a similar situation.

    Lawless men?

  3. Arcadia: None of the trials that occurred during the night before the Jewish rulers brought Jesus to Pilate were legal.

  4. p.s. (to #, above)
Pilate said, three times, “I find no fault in him.”

Strangest things spoken by Green Whack Jobs heard in Llamadom this week.

No Jew can consider themselves even the lightest shade of green if they light Hanukkah candles of any kind. No, using electric ones, smaller candles or lighting fewer candles than normal does not apply for any Green Offsets.

Christians can’t be the slightest bit green even if they decide not to put electric lights on their Christmas tree, or replace the old lights with energy efficient LED ones or use fewer lights because no Green Christian could ever have a tree, natural or artificial, in the first place. Christians have always been the worst enemy of Mother Nature when it comes to religions.

Single people, read unmarried or those not living with another adult, cannot be green under any circumstances no matter what, regardless of their claims otherwise. Yep, two can live much greener than one under all circumstances and single adult people, who live alone, should be killed horribly.

Parents who currently have children cannot be green unless they kill one of them at their choosing.

All future children should be aborted until the number of people worldwide reaches a safe level for the planet.

All divorced people cannot be considered green until both are at least living with someone else again. Divorces should not be legal going forward. Marriage and adults living together is green and to be mandated by law if possible.

Gays living together, who adopt children are greenest of all. They are much greener than any opposite sex adults living together or married since accidental natural births could occur.

Parents, with more than one child, can place their other children up for adoption by gay couples, if the gay couple live together, rather than be forced to choose which children to kill in order to be green.

I won’t tell you what Greenies in Llamadom said about people who give and receive Christmas, or other presents, even if they are not presented in boxes and gift wrapped :-)

I kind of messed the Meditation thread up since I wanted to post the previous on Whirled Views instead. Well, pretend they are there and everything should be fine, meditation wise.

  8. Isn’t it amazing that our God conquered death itself! It shows just how powerful he really is.

p.s. I find it interesting that hardly anyone comments on meditations…

    Liz,
I think a big part of what a number of us enjoy on this blog is the interaction with others. These meditation threads do not tend to lead to interaction as much as other types of threads. It’s not that we have to argue to interact, but the most active threads are definitely the ones where there is disagreement. These meditation threads specifically ask us not to argue, so even if we disagree with another’s viewpoint most of us refrain from pointing that out.

Regarding the above quote, I have to admit that not a lot comes to mind (it’s bedtime, so not much comes to mind about anything right now). There’s the question of God planning the whole thing, but that tends to lead to theological debate.

I wondered when I read this about the phrase “losing the pangs of death.” I would have thought the “pangs of death” would be the experience of dying, but this seems to refer to the state of being dead, which I wouldn’t have thought had any “pangs” to it. That line of thought doesn’t lead me to anything particularly helpful to glean from the passage, though, which is why I wasn’t even going to post here.

  10. I always read the meditation comments, sometimes they help me understand the passage better.

This year, I’m more in touch with the glory of salvation.

My brother-in-law didn’t think he was very successful in life because he never ‘arrived’ vocationally. (3 masters degrees under his belt).

But, he did better than he thought.
But, that didn’t get him to Heaven.
    The blood of Jesus did.

We look back on his life and learn from his example, good and not-so-good.
But, our hope and our peace comes from the completed work at the cross.

We are so grateful about that, and about Heaven, this year.

This may seem trite, but is true nonetheless…

Because of the hope that Jesus gives us, we not only do not have to fear death, but we don’t have to fear life either.

I’m not afraid of death (at least, I don’t think I am), but it’s the stuff between now & the time of my death that can make me afraid.

Knowing that Jesus is with me even now, & promises to never forsake me, gives me the peace & courage to face each day & each challenge. And life is certainly full of challenges!

    Speaking of challenges -

As I was writing the above comment, #11, I got a phone call about my mom, who has been in the hospital with pneumonia since Fri. night.

X-rays show some spots or shadows in one of her lungs. This could be scar tissue or something else benign, but they will have to take a biopsy.

Mom, who will be 71 in Jan., has already had 2 major surgeries this year, along with cataracts surgery. Most of the year she has either been ill or trying to recover from an illness or surgery.

Mom says she believes in Jesus, but hasn’t yet put her full trust in Him. And so, she tends to be quite negative about things, doesn’t handle disappointments well, & is very easily frustrated.

Please pray that she will finally give herself to Jesus wholeheartedly, & receive the peace & comfort that only He can give her.

  13. I prayed, Karen O.
    Just wanted you to know.

    I’m sorry about your mom.

  14. Liz - I am not apt to comment on a thread when it seems so personal and usually the meditations thread are very personal. It’s easier to comment on things not so close to my heart than it is those that are emotional etc. Does that make sense?

Karen - I have been praying for your mom and will certainly continue to do so at this special time of need!

    Thanks.

Well, I got the info wrong. Mom gets confused sometimes, & with her mind on her lungs due to the pneumonia, she said the spots were in her lungs.

Actually, there are cysts on her ovaries, & a lymphnode or 2 near them are swollen. An ultrasound will be done tomorrow, & I would imagine a biopsy would still be needed, but in the correct area of her body!
