    Fatal Attraction?

  2. The holidays are coming. What makes them special to you? What can you do to make them special to someone else?

I didn’t have much respect for the televangelist set before, but today’s news — Robertson to endorse Giuliani leave me speechless. There really is no depth or principle among Christianists. It’s just about winning.

  4. Oh, crud, I think Musing got it right. I was thinking he said one of those similarly-titled movies from the same period (like “Basic Instinct”), but I think he’s right.

I hope he doesn’t got to kitchen anytime soon and find his favorite rabbit simmering…

  5. DCL, I would want to know more about the story, but it doesn’t surprise me at all. Of course, Robertson, for all his pull, doesn’t speak for all Christians (at least the circles I run with) and more than Jon Stewart speaks for all twenty-somethings. Still, that is a silly endorsement, imo, and you have every right to be critical of Robertson.

It frustrates me to hear some conservatives (Mike Gallagher comes to mind, as does James Dobson as well), who might like a candidate like Huckabee, but refuse to endorse him b/c they think he has “no shot” at winning. Well, of course not, especially when you’ve already picked him to lose! Gallagher, like Robertson, seems willing to put his support behind Guiliani, while Dobson wants to pack up his things and go home and mope. Simply ridiculous.

Musing sweeps in to reclaim his quote-guessing title! Fatal Attraction (scariest-ever film for men, I’ve heard) is correct. A digital fizzy Coke for thee:

I guess “Pastor” Robertson has no problems with a twice divorced NY Catholic who is pro-choice and used to shack up with a couple of gay guys.

    Yep, there’s a principled pastor.

Well at least Rudy is pro-war.

By the way, somewhere kicking around out there is a story that Rudy insisted on putting NYC’s emegency operations center in the WTC, even after it was bombed the first time. That seems singularly stupid.

The story also includes some assertion that there was a special very private suite or bedroom constructed within the center, which Rudy and his eventual third wife availed themselves of liberally during construction.

True or not, the real question for those who like their politicians to be moral is “would it surprise me if it were true?”

    Testing for my gravatar.

Hey! How ’bout that Pat Robertson?! HA!

  9. 9. Gravatar by Sawgunner 11.07.07 at 1:18 pm

#7 Arcadia, the WTC towers were begun in the late 60s and completed by 1971. Was Rudy already monkeying around with wife #3 way back then? That rascal. Too bad the media never gave him the Gary Hart “Just follow me around” treatmt.

I havent yet read Pat Robertson’s rationale for endorsing Rudy. Has no one considered the fact that a Pat Endorsemt might work AGAINST Rudy’s prez efforts? I wonder if there was a back room quid pro quo involved?

On an unrelated note, I realize some here listen to country music. Well, today’s “country” is scarcely recognizable to old-style purists. One of the living legends of old-time C&W music–from the era when Merle, George, Tammy and Loretta all got heavy airplay—has passed on.
    His name was Porter Wagner.
He performed in gaudy rhinestone suits, reasoning that folks who paid for a show needed a showman on stage. If he is recalled at all in the MSM they will say he “disovered” Dolly Parton.

Hey Brad, if you’re out there, would you mind answering some questions about your day to day life?

For example, can you describe a “normal” day? Do you sleep in a tent? Work in a MASH-type tent? I’m sorry I haven’t asked any of this before, but it has crossed my mind many times to wonder what your life is like in Iraq.

Dr. Dobson is interviewing military members today on his program about PTSD–do you discuss that at all?

    Thanks.

I just don’t like the new forum format. It’s too hard to find blog entries, and impossible to find entries that I last posted on…. I’m used to forums where you can page through all the posts, or “search” for entries, and all the most current posts push the topic to the top.
The html is too “DIY”, as are the smilies, there’s no preview (although it’s to be addressed), the avatars are too slow to load (takes days instead of minutes) there’s no profile available unless you go to the regulars page, and you can’t contact others unless you request them to post their email address.

I really wish for a more fully orbed forum software.

  13. MIM,
As far as current comments pushing threads to the top (not exactly what you mentioned, but might be helpful), the list can be found by going to the upper left-hand box, clicking on “More Active Posts”, ignoring the top list, and choosing from the second list. Recent comments keep the list sufficiently current, although we can’t see who made the last comment, or when. :(

    10 Michelle,
I am Brad O’Brien. Had trouble re-registering when this Blog became new and improved. I’ve never fired and would not want to fire the Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW) but its an awesome gun. I’m a sawgunner in name only.
Right now my medical company is preparing to fly back to Ft Hood after our year here is done. The new medical unit is out of Ft Lewish Washington near Tacoma. They spent 6 mos in Taji and now they will be here for 9 more. Good folks. They’ll do fine
I sleep in the aid station. This bldg is no tent. It was remodeled by KBR and fitted with a/c units, 110 and 220 electric outlets. I have hot water for showers and our portajohn trailers have flushers. The big focus now is giving immunizations to soldiers before they redeploy. The docs and PA’s are completing the PDHA (post deploymt health assessmt)
Do I have PTSD? I will have some lasting memories of wounded troops brought to our trauma room, but I wouldnt label it PTSD. PTSD is hopefully being minimized or managed by the Combat Stress Control teams and our mental health officer (a PhD psychologist or psych social worker) I have talked to soldiers who unlike me “go outside the wire” and I’ve heard them describe pulling their dead friends out of (often burning) vehicles after an IED blast. I’m hoping for no more fatalities so close to our date to fly out. We will be in Kuwait for a brief while and then we’ll head to the states on an 18 hour flight.

  15. I think Porter Wagner might have died last week. I did get to see him once at the Grand Ol Opry where he sang Ol’ Slew Foot. I figured when in Rome…and I knew the words so I sang along. My husband told me if he had known about that side of me he never would have married me.

  16. 16. Gravatar by Chas 11.07.07 at 2:10 pm

Sawgunner: Before I learned that you were Brad, I was going to tell you that back before your time, we had a big discussion about country music. Essentially, I am a big CM fan, but I don’t care for much modern country. It lost me when it became rock & roll on a steel guitar.

I’m repeating myself here, but I like Eddie Arnold, Jim Reeves, Cowboy Copus, all the Hanks and Marty Robbins. I keep thinking of others.
I especially like Merle Travis and Chet.
I occasionally buy their CD’s and my hobby is ripping their music from tapes and LP’s that I own and creating my own CD. I also like Dolly, Loretta, and other women. You’ve never heard of her, but I was in love with Anita Carter.

  17. Chas, Even June Carter said that Anita had the best voice.

So you’re always at work? You never leave the first aid station unless you’re in the computer tent or eating? And you’re just doing routine medical care, like immunications? No triage?

What will you miss the most once you get home?

And what’s the weather currently like there? 49 and sunny north of San Francisco . . .

I read Whirled Views first–thanks for posting the link on the front page right–and then go to most active posts. Otherwise, it feels like I spend too much time aimlessly paging between posts.

I think “recent posts” would help if it would list “today’s posts.” But perhaps there’s not enough room? It seems like we have more posts than we used to.

We have set a new record. Not a good one. There have been more U.S. deaths in Iraq in 2007 than in any previous year of the war. We still have 2 more months to go in 2007. Take care over there, Sawgunner. I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say our thoughts and prayers are with you for a safe and speedy return to the States.

They want us to take older brother now, as well. If you pray, please do so. We need wisdom. It has been tough but one of the reasons we are doing this is to help families stay together. The past week has been very very good, the school says all are wonderful students, doing the work, cooperating in class, etc. we have had no real issues at home. All are delightedly surprised with the turnaround. We do not want to rock the boat, but the boy is just a boy in need of a home..

I don’t know - I think I’ve adapted pretty well to the new site. I’m learning to look at the “Front Page”, “The Nation”, “The World”, and obviously “WorldMagBlog”. There is some overlap in those 4 screens, but I’ve learned to ignore that. I have paid almost no attention to the boxes on the left or the right of the screen (”Recent”, “Most Active”, etc.).

I tend to stay with the current day’s blogs, as I always have. I’ve rarely gone back more than one or two days anyways, unless it’s a really “hot” blog. I’m also pretty good about remembering what number my most recent post was, so I can tell instantly if someone has commented after me. I comment on a lot of different posts, but I’ve been able to keep up. I’m also used to moving down to the bottom of the page to read the most recent posts. I suggested putting the most recent comments at the top, but I was pummeled for that idea.

So, I guess what I’m saying is, I have few complaints about the new site. The “preview” button is the only thing I’d like, and it’s on the way. All in all, I’m happy with it.

Due to the continuing news black-out by WorldMag on Pakistan, here is the latest update:

Bush finally called Gen. Musharraf today and told him he was a “naughty boy”. But he’s still planing to give him $800 million dollars (no strings attached) in the coming year.

Is everyone happy about giving $800 million dollars of our tax money to a dictator? Will congress finally grow some and stop Bush?

Meanwhile, on Capital Hill, the Deputy Secretary of State, John Negroponte told the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee that the Bush Administration considers Pakistan to be an “indispensable ally” and that our partnership with Pakistan is the only option. (Who has whom by the short and curlies anyways?)

In other words, the bottom line is, Bush Administration isn’t going to do squat to Pakistan.

By the way, Osama Bin Laden has a higher approval rating from the Pakistani people than Gen. Musharraf does. That doesn’t bode well for America.

  25. Oh Mumsee, I’ll be praying for that possibility. Wow.

What new dog will you be getting, if you get the boy? :)

Yes, the WoW blackout of news about the crisis in Pakistan is astonishing. Talk about an unstable country with nukes…they make Iran look like Switzerland. But Pervez is Bush’s buddy in the “war on terror”, and so it’s best not to talk about what’s going on over there, as it wouldn’t be good for Bush or the GOP. But WoW’s on top of the Google maps story.

By the way, I must commend the Republican Senator from South Carolina, Lindsey Graham. I watched him on C-SPAN last night as he gave an eloquent speech on why the United States should not use torture, including waterboarding. As a former JAG officer, he knows what he’s talking about. He pointed out that it was none other than Ronald Reagan who urged passage of the treaty against torture and the Convention on Human Rights. He put the Bush administration to shame for it’s actions.

Although he is in the party opposite, I have always found him to be a decent and honorable man. He does his country and his party proud.

I urge people to contact their senator and congressperson to urge them to make waterboarding illegal under US law. Although it is illegal for our military to waterboard, it is not illegal for the CIA or other entities to use it. It is illegal under international treaties that we have signed, but the Bush administration says they don’t apply. So it’s time to make it straightforward and clear.

I’m not real up on the Pakistani situation, though I’ve been paying closer attention the last couple days and just read in World, the Nov 3 magazine, that Bhutto is backed by the US. I can never keep track of “what side” Bhutto is on but have had a positive sense of her since reading her bio a number of years ago.

But Musharrif wants her to come back as a co-president, or not? Some are suggesting his regime was behind the attempted assasination. It always gets too complicated for me to follow when so many shady characters are on both sides at the same time. :-(

That’s why I like to wait until the history is written 20 years later, though that doesn’t do anyone any good now. :-(

  30. Anlir,

I appreciate your updates on Pakistan, and your comment in #28.

The irony about our borderline torture is that it probably has done very little to gain us good intelligence or to protect us against terrorist threats. It is shameful that the United States is engaging in it and it is very sad that so many people on worldmagblog feel obliged to excuse and rationalize it.

  31. Hi Anlir,
I answered your question on another thread.
I`ll go now to see if you found the answer.

    Michelle,

Politics in a country like Pakistan is always quite murky and consists of constantly shifting alliances.

In regards to Mrs. Bhutto, she was a rather corrupt Prime Minister during her two terms in office. There have been longstanding indictments against her. Gen. Musharraf led a coup which overthrew her back in 1999 and sent her into exile.

Here are the basic parts of the “deal” between the General and Mrs. Bhutto:

    1. The criminal indictments against Mrs. Bhutto would be dismissed. There was no legal basis for doing so, but it was done any way. The rule of law is not strong in Pakistan.

    2. Mrs. Bhutto would support Gen. Musharraf’s bid for another term as President (which according to law he’s not entitled to). This is what the Supreme Court was going to rule on before he imposed Martial Law.

    3. Gen. Musharraf would give up his role in the military.

    4. The government of Pakistan would repeal the law preventing someone from service a 3rd term as Prime Minster. Mrs. Bhutto has already served 2 terms.

In short, it was a “deal with the devil” alliance of two corrupt people to continue running the country. It was a shaky deal from the start, and neither one really trusts the other. Gen. Musharraf’s actions may well scuttle the whole deal.

To be sure, both the General and Mrs. Bhutto have significant support in Pakistan. But neither of them have majority support. Most people in Pakistan consider them both to be corrupt leaders.

The reason the US supported Mrs. Bhutto was because the Bush administration was trying to hedge their bets in case Gen. Musharraf was overthrown or voted out. What they didn’t count on was the two linking up.

To lighten things up a little, written Sunday and too busy to post.

I have recently started taking one of these new wonder drugs to help people stop smoking called Chantix. Doc said he had ‘300 quit smoking and only 1 fail to stop.’ I said ‘sign me up’ and Doc said’ well I have to tell you about the side effects.’ He went on,’ there are the usual side effects; headaches, joint pain, constipation, heart rhythm irregularity, enlarged heart, uncontrollable drooling, loose stools, diarrhea, difficult breathing, asthma, kidney and or liver failure, hardening of the tongue, nose, and ears, heart attacks, clogging of arteries, droopy lips , eyes and ears, sense failures of; vision, hearing, smell, taste and touch, difficulty in balance and locomotion and the odd appendage or digit that would fall off unexpectedly due to gangrene or some other unknown reason. But those are not the really cool side effects’ he added quickly.

‘Well, how cool could these other side effects be, compared to the other minor ones you mentioned Doc?’ came weakly out of my mouth. Oddly, my tongue was already stiffing up some and my lips were drooping for some reason making my talking and someone understanding it difficult. The Doc went on and said ‘Llama my man, this drug also can cause vivid dreams. Some of my patients say they can actually control their dreams and can dream about what ever they want – in strange and unusual ways.’ I said ‘Doc, this drug is perfect for me. I am a little on the older side, don’t sleep much and never dream anyway. These aren’t wet dreams are they Doc?’ ‘They can be what ever you want ole flee bitten one, but if your private pubic parts fall off – don’t come galloping back in here and blame me’ he said smiling.

It’s been a week now, taking the drug and I am supposed to stop smoking today but the dream I had last night, in vivid color by the way, may make me keep smoking for awhile longer. My dream was so real and frightening, it nearly kept me from getting up and going to church this morning. Heck, in the middle of the day on Saturday, I was channel surfing Comcast for college football games right after lunch and I happened upon the Fort Valley State and Albany State University State game at halftime. ASU’s band was on the field with their dancers doing what they called their halftime show.

My Gawd, those halftime show dancers from ASU were unusually hot, heck they were Great BallsoFire in the Jerry Lee Lewis way, and,’ No Sir’, I’m not complaining. My HDTV started to melt right before my eyes. These dancers gave ‘Once you go black you never come back’ new meaning. I thought I must be dreaming in the middle of the day on this powerful anti smoking drug or I somehow hit the On Demand ‘Porno Movie’ button on the remote by mistake. But no, it was just the ASU dancers regular halftime show. Yep, it’s not only true white guys can’t dance but white women can’t dance much either. What’s the world coming to? Back to the subject of my dream since theses dancers don’t hold a candle to the reality and vividness of my first Chantix inspired dream last night. You non smokers, male or female for that matter, especially some of my more sexually repressed socialist or gay friends who wouldn’t be caught dead smoking anything but pot, crack, smack or meth, might want to get a prescription for it from your doctor as all ancient llamas in Llamadom have now sworn off Viagra forever because of it.

The backdrop of my dream was a huge self portrait of the now long dead Frank Zappa holding a sign that read ‘Sexual gratification can only be achieved by the use of machines.’ The setting was at night in Paris in the middle of the Place de la Concorde, with the brightly lit Eiffel Tower off to one side, the Notre Dame in the middle off in the distance with the neon festooned Moulin Rouge on the Champs de le Lyses easily visible in the background off the other side. The whole scene smelled faintly of fine Champagne from California, fresh Frenchy Frau Grass with a hint of truffle in walnut oil. It was a little crisp but interspersed with warmer breezes perfectly timed to provide the most comfortable fall evening on could wish for – even in a dream. There was a raised stage in the middle of the plaza with 6 lecterns on it, separated in 3 groups of two, with a higher stage behind it where the very black ASU halftime dancers were dressed in all white sequined, slinky cocktail dresses. These fine ladies were playing low slung, black Stratocasters guitars, sashaying perfectly in unison to their fine picking and Robert Palmer’s voice singing strongly his ‘Addicted to Love.’ If this doesn’t, pardon the pun, set the stage for you, I will suggest that Chantix or Viagra won’t do much good for you either. Anyway…….

DCL writes: There really is no depth or principle among Christianists.

Don’t care one bit what Mr. Robertson’s opinion is or who he endorses.

What I find very interesting is that DCL has always claimed to be a Christian, but wrote that sentence.

Christians don’t use the word “Christianist.”

    I rest my case.

It turns out the lecterns are for the US Presidential Debates that the finalists of each party will be having next year after the conventions - and the winners were: Hillary for President with Obama for Vice President for the Socialists, Giuliani for President with McCain as Vice President for the Conservatives and alGore for President with Kucinich as Vice President for the Greens as a third party. All six would take the stage for a free for all debate.

Steven Colbert, who pronounces his name like a perfect Frenchy, was the MC, like they have one for Oscars. The moderators who asked the questions were Jon Stewart of the Comedy Channel, Ahmadinejad of Iran for Al-Jazeera News and Kim Jung Ill of North Korea for the Chinese Commie and Socialist News Daily.

Someday, I will fill you in on the rest of this first Chantix dream if I can figure out a way to clean it up enough to pass WMB pasting standards but, take it from me, it was just plain hilarious. I may be on this Chantix stuff for the rest of my life - just for the dreams and I no longer care if I ever stop smoking :-)

I find #36 disgusting and highly inappropriate for this site.

And people, especially drinkers, should think long and hard about Chantix. Before you do, Google “Carter Albrecht Chantix”. He was a Dallas musician, 34 years old, who began Chantix to quit smoking. Everyone said he was the most mild mannered, gentle, loving person they knew. But he began having strange, compelling dreams, and one night around 3 AM he began beating the living daylights out of his girlfriend. He then went to a nearby house and began trying to kick the door in. The homeowner warned him repeatedly to stop or he would shoot. He didn’t stop, and when it appeared he was about to break through the door, the owner fired what he thought was a warning shot. But he wound up killing Albrect, who was very tall.

  42. Why can’t i post on the “Stop Blaming White People” thread??

America still allows race to distort an essentially economic issue.

Cosby et al are only repeating the Boy’s Own Stories and self help literature of the late 19th century. The few who managed to crawl out of the industrial wasteland of the late 19th century would turn around and lecture the defeated and the exploited.

The rise of the middle class in the 1950s occurred before the Civil Rights Movement and in an era of neighbourhood covenants. Blacks missed out on the expanssion of the middle class and homeownership. Since that time, the middle class has fought to maintain the status against a sustained attack by the elites. Blacks never made it to the starting line. Luke’s stats fit in nicely here.

A more valid comparision of social pathologies is to eliminate the rich and rural and focus on the difference between poor urban whites vs poor urban blacks. You need to eliminate other factors to see if Cosby is justified in critiquing blacks for a defeatist culture when if fact its just good old fashioined exploitation here.

  43. Apparently the topic “Stop Blaming White People” has been closed. Are we having a race riot or something?

I was about to post a hurried, incoherent reply to Night Train, as we are having a fun discussion and I didn’t get to reply. So I will post it here in the next message box.

  44. The following post is meant to be posted in “Stop Blaming White People.” I can seem to post there.

Lynn, or Kristin, or whomever, if there is a problem, you can delete my post.

    Night Train,

I have my opinions. They are based on my experiences and things I have read. In general, I consider “right answers” to be those that agree with my answers, “wrong answers” to be those that disagree with my answers. Are you any different? Is anybody at wmb any different in this regard? As far as I can see, no one at wmb changes their opinions on any serious issue based on what they read here.

Once in a while an experience happens or someone says something that changes my mind. For example, I have no strong opinion about the issue of women in combat or the military. As I have never served in the military (except for a year of required ROTC where I performed dreadfully), I am reticent about spouting forth as an expert. I have read yours and other comments with interest, and I tend to lean a bit toward your argument, but I am still an agnostic on that issue.

On the other hand, your attitude about women in general seems fairly sexist (in a not particularly sensible or intelligent manner). When you rail against female suffrage, I can’t tell whether you are dead serious or engaging in some gigantic put on to get a rise out of people.

I put people on all the time, but I usually don’t hide it. I find your answer to me coy and evasive, much as Nick Peter’s answers to me were (though, he mostly avoided answering me).

You don’t seem to be any more of a shy or timid person than I am. If you think there is a difference between white and blacks in terms of intelligence or morality or work ethic that is based on genetics, than that is what you believe. I don’t much care. I just wonder where you stand on the issue and will decide how I want to interact with you in the future. As with the topic of homosexuality, I am not under any illusion that I am going to change anybody’s mind by messages I post.

I’ve been short of time to read and post for a few days as I have to get up at 4:30 am to cover the schedule of another person who just quit. (Insert sad violin music appropriate for self-pity.)

I’ve had conversations with you and found some of your comments in the past interesting, and being a self-centered person, people who attack me a bit on line (as you did with your complaints about my personal stories) get my attention.

I wasn’t paying much attention to Bianca’s posts. Do you want me to “attack” her?

As I’ve said (and you are equally good at this), it’s quite easy to post personal attacks at wmb without violating TOS. If you want me to attack Bianca, I charge a fee for posting personal attacks. Email me at [email protected] and we can discuss terms.

    :)

In the meantime, I would be very impressed and appreciative if you just provided a straightforward reply whatever it is. As you did so when I asked you a different question, I know you can do it.

As far as worldmagblog in general goes, my answers are generally considered “wrong answers.” For example, I consider the belief that Christ was born of a virgin and rose from the dead a myth. I am indifferent to the fact that most people here disagree with me in this regard.

I don’t think it’s been closed. WoW’s been acting screwy all day.

  46. I was also able to see Porter Wagner perform and then shake his hand. I saw him perform on the Opry, but shook his hand at Dollywood where he used to drive around on a golf cart. He was all dressed in his fancy duds and liked to meet the fans.

I hope we have more performers like Josh Turner who will still do some semblence of country, since the old guard is dying off. All music evolves, but when there is no difference between pop or country neither benefits.

  47. “WoWs been acting screwy allday.”

How is that different than any other day? Are you sure it isn’t a sign of Divine Displeasure? Or Divine Pleasure as the case may be?

  48. 48. Gravatar by Night Train 11.07.07 at 7:45 pm

Actually, maybe it has been closed. There’s not even a commen box there now. I’ve never seen that before.

  49. I thought since my White Trash comment offended some I would tell you how to make White Trash so you can give it out as Christmas presents.
    Chex Cereal
    Cheerios Cereal
    Stick Pretzels
Mix all together and coat with melted white chocolate.
Sweet AND Salty. Just like ME!!!!!

  50. I just read Bianca’s #41. I am not sure that it says anything profound or irritating. Her comments (and most of them) have to do with race relations as a matter of culture.

I’ve had many experiences over the years involving white people and black people. Many of them involving white women and black women. (Which makes me sound racy and exciting, except I am not.) Pun intended.

I’m not going to start telling them here. I think most of the comments in that thread, especially ones that involve broad generalizations, are not particularly informed or intelligent.

You’re welcome. No. It was nothing. Don’t bother to thank me. Oh, that was an attack? Whatever.

  51. Maybe I’ll gay this thread. We can talk about black and white homosexuals. Many years ago, while I was in college, I read James Baldwin’s novel Another Country and I mentioned something about it to a college friend of mine (who was white), and he said, “I think James Baldwin doesn’t know whether he should be more upset because he is black or because he is homosexual.”

I was very impressed with it as a skillful jibe. Thinking of that comment now, about 40 years later, I can’t help wondering if Nick Peters or Night Train was actually one of my classmates back in college. Who’d of thunk it?

I really wonder if people at wmb realize how silly they sound sometimes.

That was a condescending remark. I admit it. I take full responsibility for it.

    RE: Llama post 36

For a minute, I thought I was reading Hunter Thompson. I was waiting for you to conclude your post by saying “There is nothing in the world more helpless, irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an Chantix binge.”

    :-)

I don’t believe I have ever seen a thread “closed” by Worldmag before. But if any thread needed to be closed, that one is it. It was getting way out of hand. It reminded me of some of the bad old days around here when people argued about gays.

  54. Anlir, I thin I love you. If you ever decide to cross over the great divide I would be willing to drive to Atlanta for you to have the priviledge of buying me dinner. I really used to like Pano and Pauls. Fried lobster! Could there be anything better???

  55. 55. Gravatar by Night Train 11.07.07 at 8:40 pm

Now maybe I’m a bit more open minded than most people here when, but aside from the posts by llama and Bianca, I’m having a real hard time understanding how anything on there was offensive, or race baiting, and why the thread “needed” to be closed as Anlir says.

  56. 56. Gravatar by Night Train 11.07.07 at 8:42 pm

If WoW doesn’t want discussions about race to take place, why do they post articles about race?

  57. 57. Gravatar by Victoria 11.07.07 at 8:43 pm

I hope the thread is closed, it had become offensive!

Any more offensive than #36 on this thread?

Oh a race thread is always going to get heated. I’ll respond to Kim’s last comment here though, because it isn’t part of the drivel and seems to me to be important.

Kim points out the federal housing loan discrimination was made illegal by the Civil Rights Act of 1968. But the civil rights act did not suddenly grant black families who had been denied loans houses “on the house”!

My parents were born in 1956! Had they been black their families might not have had the equity to finance their educations or to loan my father the money which started the small business that provided for my upbringing. My grandparents ability to buy a home with federal assistance (and they most certainly did) can be identified as the source of my privileged upbringing. That is what a lot of black people in my generation didn’t have, and that is what “white privilege” means to me.

This isn’t an obscure fact! It’s the central theme of Raisin in the Sun!

    And in three books-
Naked Science, Edited By Laura Nader
Black Wealth, White Wealth by Melvin Oliver and Thomas Shapiro AND
Being Black, Living in the Red by Dalton Conley
    -
You can find it throughly spelled out!

  62. 62. Gravatar by Night Train 11.07.07 at 8:58 pm

I could be wrong, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Bradley asked them to close the comments, feeling he’s not getting the respect he deserves. If you peruse his blog, you’ll see he’s used to an adoring crowd of kow-towers, bootlickers, and apple polishers. And he doesn’t take it well when someone asks him to defend something he’s written, or criticizes the broad brush he paints with about race. No matter how deferential they are in their comment, no matter how long they’ve been telling him how great he is, no matter how much groveling they preface their criticism with, he gets mad. He doesn’t answer the question, and makes it clear that he’s not happy with them, usually with some snarky remark.

  63. 63. Gravatar by Luke 11.07.07 at 8:59 pm

Sorry, it’s the central plot point of Raisin in the Sun!

  64. 64. Gravatar by Night Train 11.07.07 at 9:01 pm

This isn’t an obscure fact! It’s the central theme of Raisin in the Sun!

Have you any idea how unintentionally hilarious this is? I’ll be laughing all night. Hardly anyone these days is familiar Raisin In The Sun, in any form. If that’s what RITS is all about, then it’s an obscure fact indeed.

  65. Luke — its just not one particular category ie home ownership but the entire widening of the middle class which occurred in the 1950s. As blacks were for the most left behind, they have been trying to play catch up ever since. Their plight has been made worse since the 1970s when the elites started making a sustained attempt to reduce the middle class and return America to the gilded age. Now the white middle class is fighting to maintian its position and they are not about to let anyone else to compete for the crumbs which will be all that is remaining if the present economic structure is not changed.

  66. goodnight…

  67. 67. Gravatar by Night Train 11.07.07 at 9:11 pm

Just who are these elites who are trying to destroy the middle class?

And why would they do such a thing?

You sound like a communist from the 1950s.

  68. The middle class we know today was created in the 1950s and was one of the reasons communism popular in the 1930s no longer appealed to the masses. However, communism appealed in the sixties to campus radicals as a form of rebellion and to blacks who were economically disenfranchsied from the new middle class.

The American elite never accepted FDR’s New Deal and certainly did not accept the “Great Society”. The rollback of these ideas began shortly after the Vietnam war. For those who found capitalism ideologically correct (the Chicago boys Freidnman et al) their purpose for the rollback was to purify a corrupted version of capitalism and to let “pure” markets rule. These ideologues and their almost religious like devotion served as useful idiots to the elites who dominated America since the gilded age and who sought to regain their influence for the simple reason it would lead to a greater concentration of wealth and hopefully a more domicile populace.

And Kim, I may dethrone you as White Trash Queen. I just found out that my first cousin; a guy with 50% of the same genes and ancestors is a part time Elvis impersonator.

  72. Hi Anlir and all,
Colombia is doing wonderfully and (as an aside) is the U.S.`s most faithful ally in Latin America.

This President, Uribe, has given the drug mafia hell, and thus made it safe to travel on land from city to city once again. Of course, Hugo Chavez from Venezuela has begun funnelling oil money to the drug mafia, and is trying to empower the terrorists.

It`s been a long fight, but the people have a strong will to overcome the problem.

My Dad was a presidential candidate last election, but everyone, including him, was happy with Uribe, and he was given a constitutional exception to run for a second term. My Dad`s campaign drew attention to other areas of need.

The volcano was the highlight of the trip so far. We had a great time in the mud; but, it`s really silt. It`s impossible to sink down into it, and we could actually lay down on our backs and let it support us, comfortably, completely relaxed.

This week, I`m going to help my mom decorate for Christmas. I used to do this annually when they lived in the states. I`m here now, so she won`t have to hire the two guys who were designing for her in the last few years.

  73. My friend Laurie makes white trash with melted milk chocolate and then shakes it in powdered sugar.

    She`s the white trash queen!
    (Well, of Central Florida, anyhow.)

I am late to the party, so probably everyone has gone to bed. I see the WMB clock is now on standard time.

Like my new gravatar? It is the state flower of Arizona, the saguaro flower. We were visiting Arizona at the right time of year last summer, June, when the flower blooms (Yes, I took the picture).

EYG- sorry I haven’t responded to you from the other day. I have been busy of late. Perhaps tomorrow.

I also hate it when they close the threads. I miss the old format. Of course we all know there’s no chance of ever having that again.

  77. Bianca, if I started a “classic” wmb web site using the old format, how much would it be worth to you to subscribe to it?

Oh, you just want the old format back, but you didn’t want to pay for it. Lunch is free, too.

  78. Well Raisin in the Sun was still on my high school reading list. Maybe it’s because I’m in California.

HRW- agreed, but I wanted something concrete for them to understand.

It’s true that kbells has been fronting herself as the southern hick longer than kim has!

  79. The odd thing is, the threads closed on the old format, too. There just wasn’t a banner at the bottom of the thread announcing it. IIRC, the window was even smaller–ten days, I think.

Just goes to show you, people only complain about what they know! :)

Luke, I’m not a hick. That word is usually associated with people from rural areas. I have always lived in the suburbs. You would probably see me more as a red neck. Try to keep your stereotypes straight.
