Josh Levin asks, “In the entire history of American sports hype, has there ever been any fraud more grossly fraudulent than Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis?”  After all, they are 1-7.

Just how bad is Notre Dame? Of the 119 teams in Division I-A, ND is 119th in total offense, 119th in rushing offense, 112th in passing offense, and 118th in scoring. If Notre Dame had doubled its scoring output, it would still rank 108th. If it doubled its rushing output (currently 34 yards a game), it would barely eke out Duke for 118th place. You get the point. I should stop now.

Is he really that bad?  Seems to be.

  1. The “fighting Irish” took a hot dog to a hammer fight.

  2. Ok.. someone asked “Who Cares” on the Dumbledore thread…

    So tit for tat:

    Who Cares?

I love it. I love that ND is 1-7. And I love that they foolishly gave Weis a 10 year contract mid-way through his first year.

Even though he is recruiting well, I think he is going to have a hard time consistently winning in future years. He is trying to run the program like an NFL team, and it’s just not going to work.

Sadly, their remaining 4 games this year are cupcakes, so they will probably improve to 4-8. Way to go Chuck.

  4. Charlie may well survive this year, but next season will be his final act if he doesn’t get things together fast. Notre Dame has deep pockets - they’ll buy out his contract and get rid of him.

    I’ll make a bold prediction:

Next up for Notre Dame is Steve Spurrier.

Touchdown Jesus is certainly having a bad year!

Gerry Faust (Notre Dame coach in the early mid-80s) comes to mind as an eerily similar fraud.

While I personally love to root against the Irish, I believe that overall, college football benefits from a strong Notre Dame program. Would like to see them competitive again, but I better be careful what I wish for…

This has been one of the strangest college football seasons ever.

  6. Anilir,

Buying out Weis should be pretty easy. Tell him that the Golden Corrall is having a going out of business sale.

  7. I feel a little better now. The Cougars (WSU) - my alma mater - are not doing that well this year, although they did finally beat another PAC-10 team - UCLA! - but they’re not doing nearly as bad as Notre Dame. Why that should make me feel better I don’t know, but it does. Travis, is right - lots of upsets and strange turns this year. After last year, I thought the Cougs were going to do well this year. But, no.

Aaw! Poor Notre Dame is 1 - 7. Poor little boys. All I can say is, it’s about time! So what if they have a tradition of winning? Who made them such a national favorite? I love the changes from year to year in college football. I get tired of the same teams always going to the “championship” game. Let a few others in for once.

GO AZ Wildcats!!! (Although lately they have been the Mildcats.) If they ever get a national title in football, I hope they can repeat at least once. I would settle for finally winning the Pac-10 and going to the Rose Bowl. (But then, that might be the year the Rose gets the championship.)

I have always had a special place for Notre Dame football. I wish them well, except when they play Tennessee of course.

I don’t know that Notre Dame will ever be a dominate national team like they were in days gone by. It used to be that if you wanted to play football, Notre Dame was at the top of your list. Now there are many schools to choose from where football is a powerhouse.

Still, there are few places that can match the magic and history of football of a fall day in South Bend, Indiana.

I’m just happy ASU is undefeated and ranked #4 in BCS, USC is toast and that NE and Indy are playing each other this weekend - both undefeated as the class of the NFL - except for my Chiefs and Cardinals of course :-)
