He’s ba-ack!

Gravatar  27 Comments

Scandal-ridden Sandy Berger–who stole classified documents, destroyed them, and then lied to investigators–is now advising presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Even Clinton supporters are questioning this latest move:

“It shows poor judgment and a lack of regard for Berger’s serious misdeeds,” said law professor Jonathan Adler of Case Western Reserve University, who nonetheless called Clinton “by far the most impressive candidate in the Democratic field.”

Adler told The Examiner that it is “simply incomprehensible to me that a serious contender for the presidency would rely upon him as a key foreign policy advisor.”

He added: “If Senator Clinton becomes the Democratic nominee, at some point she will begin to receive national security briefings that will include sensitive information. At such a point, continuing to keep Berger on board as a key advisor, where he might have access to sensitive material, would be beyond incomprehensible.”

Ya think? You have to wonder who thought this would be a good idea.

Ah.. yeah.. you’d think the Clinton presidential wannabe would at least keep things cleaned up til she had the goods in hand…

  2. The Clintons and their cronies have no shame - are we surprised? Their only objective is to win at all costs and smear the opposition. It is all about power.

  3. I think it’s a great idea. He can steal documents from the RNC. (Just kidding, in case you don’t realize it.)

Goodness gracious, it’s not like the present administration doesn’t have its share of black sheep, say starting with a certain Mr. David Addington. Many of us on the Left believe that Vice President’s office has damaged America far more deeply than any of the Clintonian shenanigans.

  6. I think it’s a clever move on Clinton’s part. Mr. Berger could steal documents from the RNC for her. Just kidding!

This is not half so bad as keeping Cheney on - or bringing him on in the first place!

  8. I think Hillary is to many of us on the Left as Guliani is to many of you on the right. In the end we may all be holding our noses as we vote.

Well, I don’t like it. But every politician has a collection of unsavory characters, no?

It is interesting to watch the right go completely bananas (putting it mildly) over the prospect of HRC getting elected President. The Republicans are using her name for fund raising like there is no tomorrow. Well, that and they’re also desperate. They know that 2008 is not going to be kind to the R’s in either congress or the White House.

I think the R’s are making a big mistake by targeting Clinton. First, there is no guarantee that she will be the nominee. If it turns out to be someone else, they will have shot their wad on the wrong person. Will the American people believe them when they cry “wolf” on the actual Democratic nominee?

Second, they’re using all their ammo now. A year from now if HRC is the nominee, most Americans will be inoculated and bored by the screeching about her. Shoot, most people are tired of it already.

Third, most Americans are not fooled by the boogeyman of an HRC presidency. They know it’s an attempted diversion from the real issue: the war in Iraq. The R’s are in serious trouble over the war in Iraq.

I work in an office full of diehard R’s. To a person they all express great disappointment with Bush, they think the war in Iraq was a stupid idea, and they think a Dem will be elected in ‘08.

I predict that the “swift boating” job done on Kerry will be child’s play compared to what the Republicans have in store for HRC or whomever the Democratic nominee is. I know I will be watching with interest to see how much of a role Worldmag will play in that.

  10. Maybe ZZ should re-appear and switch to saying, “It’s all Cheney’s fault!”

  11. Yesterday at church I heard HRC had been to a luncheon at a private home near here. People had lined the streets waving flags at her. (We southerners are like that, we may not like you, we may not vote for you, but we are going to be gracious.) She kept her head down and wouldn’t look at the people. She lost a few votes that day.

I don’t think that most people pay attention to this kind of stuff. They think Sandy Berger is a mishap at the beach but thankfully we saved the fries. Yeah, WE watch it, but we’re in the minority right now. Just my opinion on how disconnected people are to these types of events. It’s just like Spinoza said about Cheney and you know what, FEW PEOPLE CARE.

I for one think its asinine.

As a Republican, I just don’t know what to say.
    Hillary doesn’t care.
    Harris doesn’t care.
    Spinoza doesn’t care.
Anlir doesn’t like Hillary but who will he choose instead?

Republicans are less than excited by our choices.
Democrats don’t seem to have any very good choices either.

I am glad God is in control.

  14. I wish it were that simple, Bob.

Well, Bob, I just don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m investigating all of the candidates as carefully as I can. As you know, I’m an avid CSPAN watcher. I’m not worried yet because there is plenty of time.

I’m leaning toward Kucinich and Dodd. I like Kucinich because he’s not ashamed to be called a liberal and I like his stands. I like Dodd because his stances seem comparable to mine. I wish there was a socialist progressive running for the Dem nomination.

When it comes time to actually vote in the primary, I’ll probably have to take Dramamine to keep from getting sick over the options available to me.

Oh, Bob, I do care. I’m a pretty passionate small-r republican, so the idea of dynasty leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. So too, does the practice of the Vice President’s office.

And I, too, am also glad that God is in control, but I am also keenly aware that God wants us to use our best wits and wisdom in governing our affairs.

There was no felonious motive. Sandy Berger stole photocopies of classified documents. Neither the Justice Department nor anybody else accused him of stealing originals. His offense was misdemeanor mishandling. He did not destroy information or convey secrets to persons who were unauthorized. The Justice Department has agreed eventually to restore his security clearance. An editorial by the WSJ declared, “Berger Cleared of Withholding Material From 9/11 Commission.”

What a stroke of good luck for Republicans! They are delighted that Berger stole photocopies of classified documents, because the misdemeanor distracted from KingBush’s terrible custody of national security after his election, which really did cause damage.

America would be far better off today, to say the least, if George Bush had listened to some advice from Sandy Berger (as well as from Richard Clarke) in addition to his neocon circle.

I don’t know anything about Sandy Berger, and I’m not interested in Sandy Berger. I have lately become more interested in Mrs. Clinton. She is not perfect, and I’m sure we disagree about many things, but I have to give her credit for standing up to the millions of anti-science creationists in this country who are good for nothing but slowing down human progress and harming our country.

“I believe in evolution, and I am shocked at some of the things that people in public life have been saying,” Mrs. Clinton said in the interview. “I believe that our founders had faith in reason and they also had faith in God, and one of our gifts from God is the ability to reason.”

“I am grateful that I have the ability to look at dinosaur bones and draw my own conclusions,” she added, saying, too, that antibiotic-resistant bacteria is evidence that “evolution is going on as we speak.”

Clinton Says She Would Shield Science From Politics

That’s a bit goofy to say “I believe” in evolution. “Believe” is for worthless religions, not proven scientific facts. Still, for a politician running for president in magic-man-soaked America, this was good news from Hillary. She is standing up to the stupidity of creationism. She now has my vote.

  19. Scroop - Berger stole copies that had original handwritten marginal notes. In that sense, he stole orignals that did not have backup copies.

  20. Qwerty, I believe in gravity. Even if it is just a theory.

  21. Corporations have already decided that the Democrats will win in 2008 and have thrown their support to HRC, much to the chagrin of the left who prefer Kucinch, Edwards and Biden. With the amount of money flowing from the pharmas, blackwater etc., HRC is becoming the beneficary of the corporate abandoment of the Republican party for 2008

Bush had Rove, the Clintons have Berger. Same song, different verse. Let her choose whomever she wills for her advisers, she will not ever get my vote (unless she gets it after I am dead).

KRM — The Archives made copies for Berger and kept the originals. Richard Clarke was interviewed by the FBI about the materials involved. Berger also had to submit to interrogation about his conduct. You may wish this crime had been a felony that damaged the country, but it was merely embarrassing.

Hillary Clinton should talk to all former National Security Advisors, even one who mishandled documents. Hopefully, the fact that she still talks to a 30-year friend despite his shame could make you think better of her.

  24. Scroop, you’re using facts again….

If Karl Rove, who hasn’t done a thing, was known to be advising Fred Thompson, or Rudy Giuliani, this would be headline news across the country.
It is disgraceful that this liar, thief and attempted reviser of history is “advising” a presidential candidate. But definitely not surprising considering it is a Clinton.
He is in the tank for the Clintons to the death
At least he fits in well with the rest of Clinton’s team. Delusional, and a complete lack of morals, or respect for this government.

  26. 26. Gravatar by Sawgunner 10.09.07 at 7:49 am

I think Berger’s offense was way way under-investigated, way under-prosecuted. The comparison with the rinky dink crime of Scooter Libby cannot be drawn enough.
Berger never divulged who in the “Clinton administration” put him up to his burglary caper. Any speculation out there why he took what he took and destroyed it? Was he trying to conceal Clinton incompetence against alQaeda?
It was shrewd of Berger to resign his law license. Had dibarmt proceedings been initiated against him, the whole matter would have been dredged back up and the Hillary campaign might have had questions put to it about him and his crime.
Did Berger have to do mandatory community service? I could use a good yard-mowing back home right about now.

” She is standing up to the stupidity of creationism. She now has my vote.”
    Oh-oh
The last piece of the puzzle is in place.
    I guess she is unstoppable.
