Stalemate continues on Capitol Hill Saturday

UPDATE: Democratic and Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill made little progress Saturday in resolving a stalemate in ending a partial government shutdown that began at midnight Friday night. The rare weekend sessions for the House and Senate involved mostly finger-pointing rather than solutions.

Marchers slam Trump across the country

Demonstrators from coast to coast took part in Saturday’s Women’s March, where they protested President Donald Trump’s views on issues such as immigration, abortion, LGBT rights, and women’s rights. In Washington, D.C., the march seemed more like a political rally, with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California, both Democrats, urging women to run for office and vote to oppose Trump and Republicans. “We march, we run, we vote, we win,” Pelosi said, to applause.

Americans, Canadians abducted in Nigeria freed

After a massive manhunt, Nigerian police rescued Friday night two Americans and two Canadians kidnapped in Kaduna state earlier this week. Police said the four foreigners are in good condition. “No ransom was paid. It was the efforts of the police through the directives of the inspector general of police that led to their release,” state police commissioner Agyole Abeh said. Authorities arrested one person and are close to apprehending the remaining suspects, according to Abeh.
